The new Jets shop on the skywalk level of the MTS Centre looks like it's just about ready to open. That and the new glass entrance to the skyboxes are a nice touch, and quite an improvement over what was there before.

It's nice that TNSE is starting to make good use of that atrium space on Portage Avenue... for what is a pretty attractive area, not a lot was happening in there before it was made part of the arena concourse on game nights this season.

Hmm. I want to like this but the building looks like a 21st century version of all those '60s "cheese box" apartments we see all over town, like all the ones along Grant ave between Nathaniel and Harrow for example. And who would want a patio on the main floor facing a bunch of parked cars?

Rentals? Fine. Condos? Not so much. I wouldn't want to buy into this.

On my way downtown this morning I saw that a rather large amount of snow has collected in the funnelator at Graham and Donald... I wonder if these things can handle what a Winnipeg winter will throw at them?

In more pleasant news, the streetscaping on Donald alongside the MTS Centre looks great. The lighting really does a lot for that block... this is maybe the first time that I can recall a streetscaping project has actually lived up to what was promised.

It's funny that I thought the exact same thing. What happens when we get a foot of snow? Surely to got you would think who-ever designed and engineered these things realized that without some sort of roof these things would just become a funnel for snow. Like I said, they MUST have thought of this.

^^^^^^^ I see dancing lights, and a multi colored dome of snow, With at least 5 months of white stuff I'm sure the minds involved in the design of these would have thought this through, heat from the lighting would probably melt any snow in short order. (No time to photo shop so here's a render)...pretty..

Fortress Real Developments and MADY Select a Winner for the 'LiveWorkPlay Winnipeg' Naming Contest

WINNIPEG, MANITOBA--(Marketwired - Nov. 20, 2013) -

Editors Note: There is a photo associated with this press release.

Fortress and MADY are thrilled to announce they have selected a winner for the 'LiveWorkPlay Winnipeg' naming contest. This iconic downtown Winnipeg mixed-use development project will soar over 40-storeys and include residential condominium apartments, office space, and retail/commercial uses. The rendering and design of the development by award-winning Kirkor Architects, was revealed in September along with the naming contest.

The contest garnered over 3,500 submissions from across Manitoba and demonstrated the enthusiasm for this project within the community and the province.

"When it came time to name this project, we felt it was important to involve the local community," said Jawad Rathore, CEO of Fortress. "We wanted the name to really reflect the scale and scope of this vertical village in the heart of downtown Winnipeg," added Charles Mady, CEO of MADY.

The name along with a logo for this development project will be revealed at a special media event in Winnipeg the first week of December. The winner of the naming contest has been contacted and will be presented with a prize of $3,000 as outlined in the contest rules.

Timbercreek buys two more downtown apartment buildings

A Toronto asset-management has reaffirmed its commitment to downtown Winnipeg with the acquisition of two Hargrave Street apartment blocks.

Timbercreek Communities, the property management arm of Timbercreek Asset Management, announced today it has purchased two three-storey, walk-up apartment buildings at 24 Hargrave and 45 Hargrave for an undisclosed sum.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~Buisness news..^
Yesterday the company also celebrated the official completion of the final phase of renovations/upgrades to the 21-storey, 185-unit building on Smith, which is called 160 Smith Street.
The final phase of the $10-million-plus redevelopment/refurbishing of the former Sheraton Hotel/York the Hotel property was the construction of a 6,500-square-foot amenities space and five new two-bedroom luxury apartments on the second floor of the building.
The amenities space, called Club 160, includes a gym, fireside room, media room, snack bar, party room, and a games room. Earlier phases of the redevelopment project included the complete renovation/upgrade of all of the suites and common areas in the building, construction of a main-floor restaurant, the installation of new exterior cladding, windows and doors, and construction of a 176-spot parkade.
~~~~~~ Completion of Reno @ the former Sheraton Hotel/York ^

Great news! That will be right behind the Buhler Centre on Portage.

I wonder if it will be designed by the same architects (DIN, iirc) and built in the same style?

Do you have any idea if this new proposal is more residences for students or the general public. It was in the UW plans a while back.

The Government of Manitoba and the University of Winnipeg are partnering to build a 14-storey apartment complex in the heart of downtown Winnipeg, giving students, families and individuals a range of living options, Housing and Community Development Minister Peter Bjornson, Education and Advanced Learning Minister James Allum, and Dr. Lloyd Axworthy, president and vice-chancellor of UWinnipeg, said today.

“This new building will be perfectly situated to provide a home for students from a variety of backgrounds and will add new richness to the growing downtown community,” said Minister Bjornson. “It will create jobs, provide an economic boost for services in the area and build upon our partnership with UWinnipeg, which has changed the landscape of downtown Winnipeg.”

I heard a completely unsubstantiated rumour (from a guy I overheard talking at another table in a restaurant) that Target has cancelled its plans to move into the stadium site because of its poor entry into the Canadian market, and the building will be leased to someone else or sold.
But I don't even know the guy. So take it for what it's worth.

I've heard from a lot of people, including myself, that Target plain sucks. Just a cleaned up version of Zellers with higher prices.
