Haven't seen any workers at the Alt Hotel site the last few days (from Portage Avenue anyway) and noticed the Glasshouse banner is no longer displayed. Are there any reasons why the work has stopped?

My guess is that they have got as far as they can go without a tower crane.

The developer will need to get off their wallets, and get some proper equipment on site.

I really don't understand the process with this project. I am now wondering if they are pushing to finish the podium first and the hotel tower later?

Either way, strange.

Maybe the weird staging has to do with the placement of the tower crane. I know we discussed it before. But I wonder if they're going to use just the one crane for both Glasshouse and ALT. So it won't need to reach the far front podium corner at Portage and Donald. Hence the use of the crawler for that. Just reach the ALT tower at one end and then Glasshouse tower/parkade at the other end.

I don't now just some thoughts.

Are there any regulations for where the tower boom swings and having loads being moved over top of the surrounding buildings? I know it seems real weird when the crawler crane leaves its boom sitting over top of Portage Ave.

Really? Why even bother... they're spending money for no discernible improvement in appearance (It's like a mountain lodge! Right on Portage Avenue!), and it's not like the tenant cares.

I believe it has to do with the project having two owners. The base and podium is Stantec and the hotel Tower is Groupe Germain Hospitality. They will be starting up the tower in Sept.

What exactly is that made of anyway? Some kind of cementitious product? Or an acrylic of some sort?

Just wait to see what it looks like when they clean the graffiti off of it. Just look at Moxies stone exterior for their patio. Maybe they didn't want to spent too much money cause they may be forced out if the "newly designed" Dollarama doesn't fit into the whole S.H.E.D. image. I hope they don't do the whole tacky "Grand Re-Opening" scheme.

Oh that stuff. That's everywhere here. "Designed by a BC architect" is Northern Ontarian for "we got our blueprints from an Okanagan Valley contractor". The other one is "these look like logs but actually they're metal tubes painted light orange".

It will go down as the 2010s version of those long, thin bricks that were popular in the 1960s.

We have a landlord (Gendis) putting their own money into a building downtown and getting dumped on for doing so.

It may not be the best looking finish that could have been put on but they are at least doing something to update the look of their property.

Exactly. I'm sure the people how use the store don't care how it looks, and neither will most of the people who go past it. They'll say "dollarama looks better than it used to", not "I can't believe they used fake stone". It is a step, albeit a small one, in the right direction.

Working at my new job, I've noticed that its bringing in quite a few people to CityPlace nowadays... what would happen if we left lets say... McDonalds is left open til later, and throw in a 7-11 somewhere in the building? Along with BP and the MTS Centre... I seriously think that CityPlace would be able to bounce back big-time and even be useful as a night-time centre to shop with high security and bright lighting.
