Well, the new runway was on the (long-term) books since at least the late 1960s/early 1970s, and the City and Province have been keeping that in mind when making plans, regardless of when it was 'announced'. (Not that it takes away from the point you were making!)

Fun Fact: The Province originally planned for 96th Ave to be the NE leg of the Ring Road before recognizing the need to leave room for the new runway in 1970. Earlier than that, the City pegged 80th ave for the NE ring road.

Electronic signs are indicating lane closures and detours tonight at Nose Hill Drive. They look to be ready to start lifting bridge girders into place for the overpass. Nice to see this one progressing at a decent pace.

Are they still planning on expanding the NW leg to 6 lanes this summer?

Yes, though I'm not 100% sure when that will be starting.

So far there is absolutely no visible evidence of this project.

Sounds like you won't see anything until August. Oh well!

I'll have pics up tomorrow of the new detours, and whatever progress they've made in the median of Deerfoot. Should be a couple new signs up as well.

The Tsuu T'ina and the Federal government have reached a settlement on three land claims in the Weaselhead area.

http://www.newswire.ca/en/story/1195403/...reach-final-agreement-on-historic-claims

If anyone is interested in the details of the three claims, I have written the histories of them here:

http://calgaryringroad.wordpress.com/2013/07/07/the-glenmore-land-claims/

I think it's a good sign that some of these historic land issues are being resolved when the largest proposed Tsuu T'ina land sale is still under negotiation. It might help things along with the ongoing talks, and the perception of dealing with non-aboriginal governments.

Hey guys, since all 5 options (plus the option of going across the reserve) for the SW portion of the ring road all require a Stoney Trail extension south of the Transcanada and then east along Glenmore at least to Sarcee, has there been any plans to just continue with that portion while the final route is determined?

This morning I noticed that 3 girders have been placed across the eventual NB lanes of Stoney (although currently NB and SB both pass under that area). Many more to go, obviously, but it is nice to see things moving along.

Long story short: without a connection to the deep south via SW portion, there isn't enough demand to warrant what would be a very expensive portion of the road. (Lots of earth moving etc.)

Yup, getting Stoney Trail up the hill south of the Bow is going to take a lot of earthmoving. That's going to be another big hill for trucks to climb.

I don't read this thread very often so please forgive me if this has already been mentioned. I was wondering if anyone knows whether of not the flyover from WB 22x to SB Deerfoot has been altered from its original design. In the original drawing I saw it looked as though traffic coming from Stoney to SB Deerfoot would cross the flyover to the right hand shoulder of Deerfoot south. Now it seems like it only crosses NB Deerfoot lanes and ends up in the median between both directions forcing any drivers trying to get to Seton Dr. to cross 3 or 4 lanes of traffic in a very short distance. If that is the case this will be a traffic nightmare. Of all the corners they could cut this seems by far the stupidest.

There is no access to Seton Blvd taking that route. I don't think that ramp ever cut over the SB lanes as well. The Out of date drawings on Alberta Transportation's website have that ramp the same way you described.

The ramp from WB 22x (stoney) to SB Deerfoot doesn't connect up with the main lanes of SB Deerfoot until after the exit ramp to Seton blvd./Cranston has already passed. In fact, the lanes only join after passing under the Seton Blvd interchange bridge.

There isn't any direct access into Cranston at all from WB 22x. That's always been the case.

Coming out of Cranston, you have access to EB 22x only from the south End of the Community.

Really? So if I were returning home to Auburn Bay from WB Stoney I couldn't go via Deerfoot at all? —?!? So my only option is to go via 52nd? Hopefully that interchange is better designed as basically all of Auburn Bay and Mahogany will be using it.

I knew that there was no way to leave Cranston from the north entrance and connect to WB Stoney, but I had no idea you couldn't even get back in. Wow. How ridiculous. Also, I thought you could connect to EB Stoney leaving from the north no? Or are your only 2 options NB SB Deerfoot?

Correct. At least Auburn Bay is better than Cranston.

At the North End of Cranston, the on ramp takes you onto NB Deerfoot, with no option of going onto EB 22x, or onto SB Deerfoot. You can go to WB Stoney as well.

To get into Cranston from WB 22x, you will either have to exit at 52nd, go south to Seton Blvd, the West to Cross Deerfoot, or head North on Deerfoot, exit into McKenzie Lake, then South across 22x.

From EB 22x or SB Deerfoot, you can easily access both the North and South entrances into Cranston.
