hostels are cool man. i've stayed in a lot of them in my travels. you get to meet people from all over the world, plus it brings young and creative students from all over. it's always a good thing when there are hostels. austin needs more of them. every now and then there aren't many great people, but for the most part the people you meet are from different cultures and you learn a lot in one stay that you'll learn in a month just by interacting with the people.

Thanks for enlightening me on hostels everyone. I guess I wasn't looking at from the perspective of being single or traveling with friends. I was looking at from the perspective of traveling with a girlfriend/significant other where privacy is important.

They are very cool. At least when I was young they were. We used to always stay in them and always had a great time.

They are not for romantic getaways though. Lol

yes, absolutely! they're not a place to take your girlfriend.... unless she's super laid back and adventurous. but even still, you'd probably wanna get a private room.

anywho... speaking of which i've actually just reserved a hostel in new york. so excited! i've never been to new york.

Good choice. From what I hear on the interwebs those hostels are great for young single males travelling alone who want to save money.

Unless any other uses are added the building will probably be very modest at best. At 20 floors, we'll be lucky if it touches 300 feet. 301 Congress for example across the street from Frost is 306 feet tall with 22 floors. Unless they add another use or have a decorative top over 30 feet high it'll probably be fairly short compared to what we've seen the last few years.

By the way, I wasn't that much of a fan of the design for Shoal Creek Walk. It was a filler building at best. I wish they'd go with a flashier design considering the location.

By the way, I noticed the crane for 2400 Nueces yesterday. It looks to be at least 260 feet tall. It was taller than 21 Rio and The Castillian which are both around 230 feet.

Well at least its exciting to see Whole Foods expand and need a new tower. I still think it would have been great if they had just build a nice size tower over their store at Lamar and just lease out space to other companies until they needed to expand.

Also I am kinda sad about the Fire House. Sounds like its about to get pushed out when they make the Hostel. Its small but they have a lot of fun events there and going to the Firehouse during SXSW was always a crazy experience. I hope they find another location on 6th or the Warehouse District.

So this article is a few weeks old but look at the very top section on page 4 asking about will Downtown see another office highrise. Of course we know now we will see Whole Foods expand but this article mentions IBC Bank planning a new building. My question is does anybody know any specific details as to the size of this building?

i believe Gensler has a render of that building. It's a pretty awesome looking midrise. I'd post a pic, but my ass needs to be at work.

I think the Whole Foods expansion will be pretty decent for that area. At 300 feet tall it will have an impact in that part of town. The tower going in now has a huge impact and isn't 300 feet tall. Mostly, that part of downtown needs some street level retail and taking out an empty lot and (hopefully) making that part of the Shoal Creek greenbelt less sketch is a good thing. That park space has gotten nicer and nicer over the last few years, and once the Green/Power Plant/Library is done I think it'll be a real gem in downtown.

Austin has a pretty massive downtown grid, and getting empty parking lots converted into something with ground level is key, especially in some of the more outlying areas of downtown.

I have some extremely fond memories of Firehouse. A group of my friends who all moved out of the country since then and I would always party there and had a blast every time. That said, I think it's fallen on pretty hard times. That whole area of downtowns club scene has kind of fallen off since the clubs shifted further towards 35. I like the concept of a hostel there, though I was hoping to see the area nearer Congress grow up a bit more now that we are getting some legit restaurants opening up on Congress itself.

Took this shot of the Federal Courthouse....The black area was full of water. Does anyone know if this is a giant fountain for the structure? If so, I am SOOOO STOKED

Are you sure it's not full of water because there was a massive storm in Austin and they have not installed the drainage yet for that area?

It does look like they are making some sort of water feature or maybe a water collection tank, you can see the piping and the black material is lining. So whatever it is it does look like it is meant to have water in it. Is this building supposed to catch rain water?
