That development is quite unfortunate. I was really hoping it would in no way replicate the wingate or the tim horton building across the street. That whole corner is going to be sucha blemish on the downtown.

Plaza to remain closed at least until June. I do not agree with this decision.

The city really needs to work on making that plaza a busy space. So they keep the traffic off it after investing what I'm sure were considerable funds to make it strong enough to stand up to traffic. This delay sounds like they just don't want to admit it's never going to have traffic. By June next year, they'll have the traffic reports for the other streets to back up keeping it a pedestrian mall.

I don't see it as the city's responsibility to program it - other than instances where it is a city event. It is the responsibility of community groups, organizations, etc, etc to use this space. The city has provided a fantastic venue now it's up to other individuals to help program it.

Just my opinion.

^Agreed. Part of what the city does is provide venues which they are doing.

It is unfortunate that they are debating not opening up the road to vehicular traffic. I'm not opposed to the idea of no vehicular traffic, but it seems like a gigantic opportunity lost to be able to design the plaza from a pedestrian view if traffic was never going to have to be accommodated for. It would have put restrictions on the designers during the process.

Ah yes, the gold painted shovels will be out in force, but when do the backhoes arrive?

Well I hope this ground breaking ceremony is more legit than the one Capital point had, remember with the fake brick wall and the sledge hammer, about a year and a half ago?

I wonder if Silverado demolition is doing the excavating??

But good news for sure and sounds like we'll have another construction site downtown. The east side of downtown will have a number of projects going at once, including the money mart bldg expansion, Regina Inn upgrades and Gardens on Rose. Hopefully soon to be added to the list in this part of downtown will be Regina center plaza, the office complex on Rose and the new 4 story office bldg by the old bus depot. Fingers crossed!

Construction has started at the Sheraton Four Points at the old Superstore site on Dewdney. There is no basement and they are drilling pilings now. Apparently it will be virtaully identical to Saskatoon's (same franchisee) which is too bad:

Would have been nice if they could have at least made it more architecturally connected to the warehouse district in terms of style and cladding. God, I hate the cheesy stucco and brick that has become an epidemic style. It is becoming the vinyl siding of commercial construction. Has there been a hotel built in this city in the last 25 yrs which isn't of that ilk?

Sorry to hear that's going on Dewdney. It's bad enough in a suburban location here in Saskatoon.

MORE STUCCO! I agree with the above poster. The warehouse district should have design regulations. They are going F-things up in that end before it gets a chance to blast off.

I'm sick of new construction everywhere its all so F-n ugly. People forget you have to look at this non-sense for 20-30 years. I just hope its structural integrity is a sound as its exterior and these new stucco builds start to fall apart sooner then later. Its harsh but I'm really not a fan of the stuff.

Totally agree with you. Most new buildings look and have the same style (brick and stucco)
Where are the architectures??
