I believe there are "sun sensors", and they come down to block the sun and the heat, to make the building more "energy efficient" so you don't use as much A/C.

I'd also assume there are manual overrides in each unit, just in case you don't like living in the dark, and having to turn on lights during the day, if you're home.

Quite a few buildings have them, but I've never heard of them being forced upon a residential building

Singapore Changi Airport uses them to prevent the big glass terminal from becoming (more of) a Greenhouse.

I'm not a big fan of the blinds. I have a feeling a significant number of the suites will be foreign-owned (thus unoccupied most of the time), so prepare to see them covering up a large portion of the building.

I hope I'm wrong about the foreign-owned thing, but the prices are just crazy and I can't imagine locals enticed into buying one.

Well, perhaps the foreign ownership will be higher than average... maybe even 4%

Never underestimate the amount of people with too much money in Vancouver!

Plus, it's cool to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars extra to have recycled toilet water and big metal shades.

Imagine all your other West Coast wealthy yuppie friends who you can impress with your LEED rating being bigger than theirs.

Thanks for the info on the blinds.

I was wondering if that was the case - i.e. to comply with the LEED rating.

I wonder if they can be individually timed once residents move in?
I wonder what the strata costs will be to maintain them?

Found some more information on the blinds:

http://www.designquarterly.ca/SolarShadingApplicationVancouverOlympic.aspx

I imagine they are photocell equipped (can detect amount of ambient light) and will automatically roll down unless set manually from the controls within the suites.

Isn't having automatic blinds an advantage. i.e. if you are really hung over and sleeping well past noon, You won't have to sweat your nuts off because your too lazy to get out of bed (or up off the floor) to close the blinds? (just one of many useful applications..)

Apparently those 36 units sold over the weekend is actually more like 15. But I'm sure Rennie's speech tomorrow will be just as positive as usual.

beautiful view, and some great shots. man maynard is really is going to fill in a crucial element there, and generally, it's mindblowing how much better done the planning was here than on the fairview waterfront portion. what a difference a decade or two makes.

Main and First Supportive Social Housing | June 3rd 2010

Here's a shot of the crane going up.

Taken by SFUVancouver, June 3rd, 2010.

This building will certainly change the street a lot. I am very excited about seeing this part of the city change.

B.C. Liberal government says it will not downgrade St. Paul’s Hospital

Vancouver-West End NDP MLA Spencer Herbert welcomes the news that St. Paul's Hospital won't be downgraded.

The B.C. Liberal government says it will not downgrade St. Paul’s Hospital. In a June 1 phone interview with the Georgia Straight, Health Services Minister Kevin Falcon acknowledged that there has been a great deal of speculation that services at St. Paul’s would be transferred to a new hospital that would be built on a Station Street site at False Creek Flats. When asked specifically if he has ruled out downgrading the West End hospital, Falcon said, “Yes. In a nutshell, yes...

there would have to be two - according to an agreement between teh nuns who run st pauls hospital and whomever - the government city or provincial - the site on burrard must remain a hospital thus ruling out a complete move to the other site - as is speculated st pauls on burrard would remain in small capacity as a health care centre not so much as full hospital as that full functioning hospital would be moved
