NYC runaway favorite for 2014 Super Bowl

INDIANAPOLIS -- A snowy Super Bowl right in Manhattan's back yard now looks like a done deal.

Arizona's reported decision this morning to pull out of the running for the 2014 Super Bowl appears to make New York the runaway favorite to host the game. That's because Tampa and South Florida -- which held the past two Super Bowls -- are the only other bidders.

The 2014 Super Bowl is scheduled to be awarded at the NFL's owners meetings in Orlando next month.

The idea of hosting a game at the new, open-air Giants/Jets complex at the Meadowlands picked up steam earlier this year when the owners waived the game's weather requirement.

Commissioner Roger Goodell also publicly praised the concept of a New York Super Bowl during the run-up to this year's game.

So sick of always seeing the game being played in Florida or Arizona.The time has come for NY and NJ to host. Hopefully, this will be the start of premiere NFL venues such as Lambeau and Soldier Field to host in the near future as well.

I always thought the weather requirement was a bit silly -- and I lived in San Diego for a couple of Super Bowls. Spread the love around like the MLB or NBA all-star games.

The Jets want to use a coin to determine which New York football team gets to play in the new Meadowlands stadium first.

Maybe boxing gloves would be a better choice.

The Giants and Jets might need them to settle their latest dispute, because the equal partners in the new $1.7 billion stadium are at odds over who will play host to first regular-season game there in September. The NFL is aware that both teams want the game badly, according to a league source, and have been unable to settle the dispute on their own.

On Saturday night, the Jets announced on their Web site that the NFL had approved their plan to settle the issue with a coin flip.

Giants win secret coin toss to play first game in New Meadowlands Stadium

The Giants have emerged with the first victory at the New Meadowlands Stadium, having won the honor of hosting the regular-season opener in September, the Daily News has learned.

Sources told the News that the Jets, who split the cost of the $1.7 billion state-of-art digs, were informed by the NFL on Monday that the Giants had won a secret coin toss conducted by the league.

Sources said Jets owner Woody Johnson was "outraged" - not because the Jets lost but because no team representatives were present.

The Jets played in Giants Stadium for 26 seasons, but felt they never had a real home. They opened on the road in 19 of those seasons.

The Jets presumably will be at home the second week of the season.

Both teams will play at the new stadium in the preseason, including their annual game against each other.

Jets, Giants will open stadium together with preseason game

The only coin flip will decide who gets the ball first.

The Jets and Giants will play each other in the first NFL game at the New Meadowlands Stadium, a preseason contest on Monday, Aug. 16.

The teams meet annually in the preseason, usually in the third of the four games. However, as co-tenants in their new $1.6 billion stadium, they will open their preseason schedules against each other.

The Jets will be the home team, and the game will be televised by ESPN.

The Giants won a private coin flip held by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell earlier this month, getting the honor of the first regular-season home game on Sunday Sept. 12. The Jets play at the new stadium the next night.

At the time, Jets owner Woody Johnson was upset that the decision was made with neither team present.

"We rejected a process in which neither team was present," Johnson said in a statement on March 15. "The League departed from our time-honored tradition and declined the opportunity to set the matter straight with a transparent process."

Of the teams playing back to back to open the regular season, Goodell said, "After extensive discussions with both teams, we have come up with what we believe is a unique approach for celebrating the opening of the new Meadowlands Stadium."

Goodell said both teams "felt passionately for their fans about being the first to play at home on the opening weekend of the regular season and could not agree on how to resolve the issue."

The Jets and Giants have met in the preseason for 42 consecutive years, alternating as the home team when both played in Giants Stadium.

NY area to host 2014 Super Bowl

In the weeks leading up to Tuesday's vote to award the 2014 Super Bowl, the Giants and Jets used the slogan "Make Some History" to push for the first NFL title game in the metropolitan area.

History has been made. The Super Bowl is coming to the Big Apple.

"I'm very excited about this," Jets owner Woody Johnson said. "I was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey. To be a Jersey boy and bring something this big to New Jersey and the New York region is a tremendous thing for all the people that live in our area."

For the first time ever, league owners have approved a Super Bowl to be played in an outdoor stadium in a northern city. The New York/New Jersey bid topped competing bids from Tampa and South Florida to earn the right to host the 2014 Super Bowl at the New Meadowlands Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.

"In 2014, the world's biggest game will take place on the world's biggest stage," said New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg in a prepared statement after the announcement was made. "We're the city that hosted 'the greatest game ever played' more than 50 years ago, and we'll be ready for Super Bowl XLVIII. Our restaurants, stores and hotels will be ready. Our pubs, cafes and attractions will be ready. And if it snows? We'll be ready for that too. This isn't beach volleyball. . . it's football!)"

Since no city could get 24 votes during the process, it took four rounds of voting to determine the winner.

Miami (South Florida) was eliminated on the second vote, leaving the last two votes with New York/New Jersey going against Tampa. New York/New Jersey didn't get the necessary 24 votes on the third vote. On the fourth vote, a simply majority (17 votes) won it for New York/New Jersey.
