My Edmontonian ex-pat friends from Vancouver all love Corona & Bay stations. My friend Summer actually dragged her born-and-raised Vancouverite fiance out of the LRT and into Corona just to show him the chandeliers...

My roommate had never ever been to Vancouver barring a couple plane transfers. It was illuminating to take along some fresh eyes.

^It's all relative though. Edmonton has its own character, it just doesn't happen to include a ton of glass these days (although we still hear the complements over a certain building that's approaching 30 years old now).

I know there are some things about Edmonton's urban fabric that I really notice (and love) when I return to the city after months of having not lived in it. Like the underground LRT (and stations), like the vibe one gets in Old Strathcona that's just a little different than 17th, Granville, Corydon/Osborne, etc.

We may not have any Shagri-La's or Olympic Villages, but as we've seen with many fresh eyes visiting and looking at our city, there's a TON to love about Edmonton that many other cities can only wish for.

I'm not going to get into A vs B discussions or slam my home town and decry the differences, because that's not constructive and it's all been said before. I did decide, however, that while I'm not going to pack my bags and head west tomorrow that I should be careful to not do anything to preclude a move in the future.

I know I could spend the next 15 years helping in my own little way to shape Edmonton into the city that we all believe it could be. But then I'll be close to 50, and Edmonton's not exactly a retirement paradise...

What's to love about this city that other cities can only wish for? I'm just curious. West Edmonton Mall (I dunno if that's something to love, but I guess to each their own)? The river valley (many other cities have great urban park systems)?

Don't get me wrong Edmonton has a lot to offer and has many great things, but I don't know any of the things you're talking about with the bolded statement, maybe we just see different things and like different things??

I actually prefer 17th/Beltline to Whyte, cause it feels denser and has a better urban fabric, and I like the store selection more, and I do not see any car dealerships, and the roads are a lot skinnier in 17th.

proving yet again the old truism about how much youth is wasted on the young...

that 15 years will fly by so quickly you'll be hard pressed to remember where they went or where you were regardless of where you choose to live.

if it matters to you though, perhaps you should ask where you will be able to make the largest contribution and make the most difference in those 15 years.

as for moving or not moving, there is absolutely nothing wrong with spending time elsewhere, even long periods of it. sometimes the only way to appreciate how good things really are here is to spend some "quality time" somewhere (almost anywhere for that matter) else.

I agree, you have to make the decision on where you can make the most impact. I've lived and worked in Van and TO, as well as spending 5 years commuting between Calgary and Edmonton. Every city has something I like, however I decided Edmonton was my home. It’s where you can still make a great impact and be appreciated even if you are a youngish 50. There is also a incredible sense of community here that I did not get anywhere else.

Re: Corona and Bay

Don't get me wrong, I DO like both stations.. But to me, the chandeliars in Corona look really gawdy, I think it's the plastic in particular. I wouldn't want the entire station to change, but at least some sort of revamp of the lights - a fresh, new glass perhaps then.

In person, they're off kilter and look worn and cheap, imho. Freshen them up but keep the theme alive, I say!

I do totally agree that Edmonton needs to retain rather then fully reno. I only wish I knew what the old City Hall and Public Library looked like back in the day - tho it would probably only make me sad to know that they are no more!

I'll tell you though, you have to have really low expectations and a shitload of patience to appreciate the urban fabric of this city. Obviously I don't. I can't picture myself crossing my fingers hoping that 25 years down the road Edmonton will be able to catch up and become a fairly decent urban city.


I'm doing what most intelligent, educated, young people do here, move out. If it wasn't for being in school I would of been gone from here ages ago.


I'm leaving at the end of the month, I know you'll all miss me.

City building permits rise sharply in August: StatsCan

The value of building permits in Edmonton rose 21.3 per cent in August over July, Statistics Canada said Tuesday.

While Alberta's capital saw construction intentions reach $358 million, Calgary saw a 7.3-per-cent monthly drop to$246.5 million.

The province as a whole saw a 3.2-per-cent increase in the value of building permits. But there was a sharp divide within the construction industry, as residential construction intentions rose by 27.4 per cent to $542.6 million while non-residential permits fell 26.6 per cent to $253.5 million. Non-residential includes commercial, industrial and institutional buildings.

"With the recent strength in Alberta housing markets, the outlook for construction in the province is looking increasingly mixed," said ATB Financial economist Dan Sumner. "Residential contractors seem to be steadily gearing back up for more work ahead, while plans for new commercial projects are getting harder to come across."

Building permits for both single and multi-family residential housing climbed in August, reversing a decline in multi-family permits.

But August's level of non-residential permit issuance hit its lowest level in Alberta since January 2006, Sumner said. "This was probably attributable to weakness in the commercial subcategory, considering industrial permit issuance rose."

Nationally, the value of building permits rose more than expected in August, Statistics Canada said. Values rose 7.2 per cent during the month from July, to $5 billion.

Well on a happy note, I've been hosting two friends who are in the process of moving from Toronto to Edmonton, one of which works for an insurance company and one who will be the lead operator for an office tower downtown... they were here on a visit this summer, after stopping in Vancouver, Victoria and Calgary to see which city they wanted to move to... they settled on Edmonton because of the good people, the recreational opportunities and the very good employment situation. And yes, they are moving downtown. So there ya go. A happy moving *to* Edmonton story.
