I never checked, I had always assumed that it was private parking for station employees. It was all torn up during the construction and I was hoping something commercial would go in to replace the small strip mall that was torn down to make way for the station.

The lot will be developed eventually, and that includes the King Edward Station entrance building...it's designed for a 4-storey wooden structure.

Because isn't that the highest and best use of land on top of rapid transit?

I will be really disapointed if the Cambie Corridor is built out to anything less than the level of Arbutus Walk.

It's perfectly designed for it.
There are ways to make it sit-friendly and skate-unfriendly.

Skateboard friendly art aside, does this mean they're rolling out all of the Canada line art right now?

Hopefully there'll be some pieces that give the stations a bit more character. I think it would be cool to have plasma screens that show inside stations in Montreal and Toronto in real time while waiting... then people underground across the country could wave or make rude signs at each other.

The most simple way to prevent skateboarding on something like that would be to rip up the sidewalk beneath it and place the bench on gravel, grass, bulk march, or even large uneven wooden planks (like a boardwalk). No one is going to jib the thing if they can skate up to it. I find it surprising this isn't though of more often.

The Montreal Metro has small English text under the French on the safety instructions.

There's no argument for 'respect will give us nice things'. Whoever approved of a WHITE sloping bench on an outdoor isolated concrete slab is pretty out of touch with reality. I'm not into vandalism at all, but the first thing that bench made me want to do is ride a bike up it. It just looks like a skate/bike ramp.

Classic exchange from the CBC article:

Again, using this selfish logic I guess we have to put up barb wired fences around every open wall surface in the city so people don't spray graffiti on it. If we don't, these walls are just "asking" for it.

No they are not designed to be skated on, skaters should have the respect to know there are areas that are allocated for skating, and areas allocated for general public use. Since when are skaters above everyone else? Many sidewalks look good for driving a smartcar down, but do people do it? No! I could easily drive my car down many bike paths that are wide enough, or how about Deer Lake Trails?

I fully support the construction of more skate parks and skating facilities in our cities and parks, but in doing so it would be nice to see the gesture returned in that they have the respect not to skate on utilities not allocated for doing so.
