Bennett nets $211M to build new federal courthouse

"The new courthouse will be constructed just west of the downtown Frank E. Moss Courthouse. Building tenants will include the U.S. District Court, probation and pretrial services office, and the U.S. Marshals Service."

I think the location of the new courthouse is terrible. I just hope they hurry up and build the thing, instead of squatting on the land for a few years. RIP, Port-O-Call.

Went to the Twilight Concert Series at Galivan tonight, and that place need the makeover they've been planning badly. It's so packed you can barely even move, and less that a quarter of the crowd can even see the stage or hear it very well. I really hope they make a decision (a good one) and get to work this fall so it will be done by the start of next years concerts. Bon Iver was awesome, by the way.

I think downtown has a reputation for crime that isn't justified. It's a serious problem, because it keeps people away. I'll lived in various places within a 2-mile radius of temple square for almost 30 years. I've only had one incident. I was getting cash from an ATM way after dark. I guy approached and said something like "Hey, get some for me." When I didn't do it, he went away. I still don't know if he was joking or if it was a feeble robbery attempt. I've never had anything stolen. This is the same thing others are saying. We're not hearing any stories of harrowing robberies or assaults. If there were any, I'm sure we'd hear about it.

Yeah, I was planning on going, but my friend was running late. I told him not to bother because if you don't get there fairly early you're going to end up in a place that isn't going to be very comfortable or good. I am usually within 10' of the stage.

Metro, don't get discouraged because of the occasional outburst. It's hard for Viper to keep up constantly with everything, but if you send him a PM with detailed location, he's usually very quick to remove the occasional over the top, non topical posts. Your too valuable a contributor to not have around. Of course, if your going to be in Hawaii for a couple of weeks, well then that's a different matter.

I'm with Metro here. I'm downtown enough to see the progress of most of the city's projects firsthand and I read the paper enough to get my fill of news.

When I do want to see what relevant information has been posted, I'll just refer to the compilations and transit subforum pages, where all of the relevant information and photos get reposted without all of the crap that occupies the other 85% of Utah posts in the MW section. The fact that we need an admin. to babysit and constantly remove posts speaks to how far this forum has degraded in the years since I first joined. Adios.

Just paying attention to the Tribune I read about them weekly downtown, and daily in SLC. I'm not trying to argue about it as it's something that doesn't need arguing. If you guys are too unaware to know that there's a decent amount of crime in SLC and downtown then you can live in your fantasy worlds, or suppose that because something hasn't happened to you, that it doesn't happen. I just want the downtown area to be a bit more of a classy place, especially residential wise, as opposed to being the center for many bums and drug-related activity, and I think that's actually happening with many of the new developments, which is good. But I also hope managers of said properties are held accountable and not allowed to let their properties become run-down or managed badly.

You know what we need? We need a downtown photo walk-about with urbanboy, T-mac, Comrad Dreynolds, and delts leading us around. Sometime in the first two weeks in August would be great! *wink* *wink* It'd give us all a chance to find all the luscious nooks and cranies that would be missed by the less observant or glossed over as irrelevent. I'm so ready to get out there already! Only three weeks to go... and waaaaaaay too many boxes to pack.

TonyAnderson: I do understand what you're saying. And of course there is crime in downtown SLC. Anyplace where there is a greater concentration of people is going to lead to an increase in all statistics. However, I believe what others and myself are trying to say in downtown SLC's defense is that it truly isn't a place that feels any less safe than any other part of the region. Not at all. Many of the violent crimes, such as what was reported in the SLC trib today, occur between people who know each other, often people who live together. In other words, people who run in unlawful circles- ie. gangs, etc- and who often are the perpetrators also end up the victms. Of course, this isn't always the case, but I think that makes the point. Those of us who live and have lived downtown for an extended period of time say we have had no incidents, attest that we feel safe, and feel we are very fortunate to live and/or work downtown. As it is our neighborhood, in my opinion, that quite settles the argument for my part.

And to those who feel the thread is getting bogged down with too much hot debate, I hope their feelings aren't in regard to this particular topic. Reading what's being argued lately over on the CCC thread, yeah, I agree it's getting annoying. But I felt that this page has been mostly within the borders of respectful debate. If it hasn't come across that way, I apologize to those who are offended. We're all very passionate about our opinions on these matters. Such a thread exists because of our geeky enthusiasm. It's easy to sound upset where online messages have no sense of tone. I think a little more patience from all of us would help.

Wouldn't it be nice if each town were distinct and surrounded by a green belt of permaculture? I think the distinction would help residents of each town have more pride in their individual city.

I aligned the freeways the way I wish Robert Moses would have, so they go around each town instead of cutting through and dividing cities in half. If this were the case, I think people would be less likely to use the freeways for anything other than regional commuting, like the autobahn in Germany. Therefore, it wouldn't have the congestion that our freeway system has today.

Also, think if each town were connected by a light-rail system, and then each individual town had a smaller scale street car system and bicycle trails, it would be amazing!

If only.....

Since people are talking about leaving the forum, I thought I'd contribute. The reason I became interested in this forum is because people seemed to have inside info. Unfortunatedly there's been very little of that. This forum isn't worth the bother. I can see all this stuff myself. And I can take better pictures.
