Calgary - upside down and at night

The Device to Root Out Evil by Dennis Oppenheimer was in Vancouver's Coal Harbour but is now on loan to the Glenbow Museum in Calgary for the next 5 years. It has been installed at the site of the Ramsay Exchange which is a huge urban redevelopment of former industrial lands just SE of Stampede Park and downtown.

Immediately south of the upside down church is the City of Calgary's Water Centre which houses the municipal water department. Calgary is blessed with some of the best drinking water which comes from the Rockies via the Bow and Elbow rivers. Sewage treatment is some of the best there is too. This building is LEED certified and is supposed to save the taxpayers money because of its efficient use of resources.

the colours change red-yellow-blue-green-purple

this is the nice side of the Water Centre which the public doesn't get to see from the street side. the rain water from the roof is channeled into this dry creek bed and re-used for irrigation.

Water Centre sculptures. There were a bunch of bunny rabbits sitting along in a row like statues when I pulled up but they scattered when I got out of the car.

Stampede Station 1 is a newly completed office building. The LED "light saber" is a disapointment. To the left is Nuera, a 36 floor twin condo project. Behind Nuera is Keynote which will have an office building and 2 high rise condo towers and a small supermarket.
The mud lot in the foreground is potentially a hotel site I think.

Balbi Legal Centre occupies the old house. in the distance is the curved fabric roof of the Talisman Sports Centre.

underexposed, but at least the red LED of arriVa shows up

there are at least 3 other Shoppers Drug Marts near by, this one just opened at London at Heritage Station which is a retail - residential complex near the Heritage C Train station. The first condo tower is now being occupied, the second tower is wrapping up construction, the crane has come down, and who knows if the next 2 towers will ever get built.

Mr. Mike's, a chain from B.C., has moved in where the Red Robin and New York New York a piano bar failed.
I stopped in with a friend for a late lunch the other day. I had a steak sandwich and fries. The steak was small, 5 oz, but tasty and the fries were good. My friend had some kind of burger that was massive in size. The ambience is much more upscale than Mr. Mike's in Kamloops, which is the last Mr. Mike's I was in a couple of years ago. I liked it, the service was good. I would go back for more.

Nuera and Keynote cranes

looking down on MacLeod Trail northbound as the C Train pulls out of Stampede Station heading south.
MacLeod Trail is often considered the main street of Calgary, but it ends at the Bow river and is only the main street of the south half of the city.
There isn't really any street that goes all the way through Calgary except maybe Deerfoot Trail which goes through the NE and SE quadrants and the TCH which goes through NE and NW.

TD Canada Trust (40 floors) is one of the buildings that EnCana occupies downtown.
The glass roof above the shopping centre is going to be replaced as well as an upgrade of the whole shopping centre, The Core.

Stephen Avenue Walk looking towards Bankers Hall

The Hudson's Bay arcade on First Street SW. The Bay is The Department Store downtown. My sister and a friend were visiting from California and shopping at the Bay when another Californian, the mass murderer Charles Ng was arrested after shooting a store detective who caught him shoplifting.

Twigs the flower shop is ready for Christmas, I wonder if Tropicana the head shop is going to decorate too?

the former Palace Theatre has been reborn as Flames Central, a great place to watch the Flames play on giant TVs and also a great concert venue. The interior is dazzling (if you like lots of TV screens!), but I haven't been able to take any pictures of it.
Almost everybody was inside watching the Flames play which is why the street is so quiet.

the intersection of Barclay Walk with Stephen Avenue Walk. Construction has begun on The Core shopping centre. Most banks have their main branch located on Barclay (3rd Street SW): Bank of Montreal, TD, First Calgary Savings, HSBC, Royal. The rest are on 2nd Street SW: CIBC, Scotia, Alberta Treasury Branch, and National.

Bankers Court is a new office building next to Bankers Hall on 9th Avenue, just finishing construction. It is fully leased.

looking down east bound 9th avenue. Bankers Court on the left, on the right there is Gulf Canada Square (head office for Canadian Pacific Rail), PennWest Plaza (one tower completed, the second u/c) and the Calgary Tower.

the sidewalk at PennWest Plaza

the base of the Calgary Tower, Ruth's Chris Steakhouse

the alley between 7th and 8th avenues. This pic made explore on Flickr!

Across Stephen Avenue from Dakota is the Hollingsworth building which was restored and enlarged as the CIBC's portion of Bankers Hall.

9th avenue eastbound

Eighth Avenue Place, almost a whole city block, a billion dollar 2 office tower project that is still proceeding despite no commitments to lease space.
One of the towers will be one of the tallest buildings downtown.

Centennial Place - 23 and 41 floor office towers going up at the same time

The Grand Theatre

Thanks for having a look!

Excellent photos, and a great city.

I was there in 1995 in late summer, but I was with family and didn't get to explore the city as much as I wanted. Still, I was impressed with the cleanliness and beauty of the city and C-train. The bike path system is excellent and well-designed, and the surrounding countryside offers a fascinating variety.

Great shots Jimby!
The EAP pit looks very nice with the site all lit up at night.
Looks like the raft footing for the W.Tower is starting to be made.

WAter Center is just awesome looking building!

I've never seen such elegant shots of Calgary. In my opinion, your photographs brought out the softer side of a city largely noted for it's rapidly expanding girt and verticality. Excellent shots.

I know we refer to Canada's "BIG 3", but it is only a matter of time until we refer to the "BIG 4", and perhaps we should be doing that already. Cheers.
