I met a man on an airplane recently who was going to Austin on his way to a meeting about wind power and he mentioned something like this. Wonder if these guys crossed paths.

Great pics you two.

Too funny. I was just downtown yesterday and took almost this same shot. It's funny how great weather brings out the photography geeks. And I have to say it, I'm falling in love with The Monarch. I like this building top to bottom, but I do have issues with the parking garage. Kind of bland, not quite worthy of The Monarch's design. And the retail section, (the windows) along the base just look a bit outdated somehow.

^ I do. I went downtown on Saturday and took some pictures of 360's base. They had the construction fence down all around the building, so I clicked away. I also took a bunch of The Monarch. I'm working on editing them. I'll post them in a few days.

The Monarch's LED lights.

I like it. I think it's a very elegant way to light this building. I just wish the lights were a little bit brighter. But I love the idea. As jsoto said, the building's crown will also be bathed in flood lighting from the roof. The lights will shine upwards onto the bottom of the crown.

I have a construction update for the Monarch (forgive me if this is old news):

Originally they had promised a move-in date of May 15 for the first 10 or 12 floors, and I think the floors above were to be delivered 10~ish at a time in 30-day increments. Well, they've had some construction delays (surprise surprise), so now only floors 1-7 will be available for move-in by May 15, and the chunk above that will be ready by July 15 (a nice 2-month delay). The common areas will of course be ready by May 15 which is good, but I haven't heard anything about the retail.
To people that were promised an 8th floor unit and above by the original May 15 date, they're offering to temporarily house them in a lower unit at reduced rent. I was told they will not reimburse moving costs (for the second move).

Just a heads up for anyone looking to rent there!

Regarding the lights on top of the Monarch crown, I think these would be much cooler if they did not change every 1 second like some sort of cheap carnival ride. Much more elegant if they changed every 10-15 seconds or so. And I agree that the "wings" should be subtly uplit, preferably to match the color and cycle of the blinking lights.

Los Angeles company takes $40M stake in Seaholm
CIM Group to foot large part of project's $117M price tag

Since its launch in 1994, CIM Group Inc. has invested in urban renewal projects from downtown San Francisco to Washington, D.C.

Last summer, the Los Angeles company planted its flag in Austin by purchasing the 16-acre Penn Field development on South Congress Avenue. Now CIM is making an even bigger local investment -- this time in one of the highest profile developments in the city's recent history.

CIM has entered as an equity partner in the $117 million Seaholm Power Plant project, contributing about $40 million to the redevelopment that will bring a mix of residential, office, retail and other uses to the site.

The Austin City Council approved Seaholm's master development agreement earlier this month, pushing the complex public-private initiative that's been in the works for years far closer to reality.

Ah, I didn't know it was like that. I pictured the lights fading in and out to different colors. I like buildings that have that. I won't judge until I see it with my own eyes when I get back. Thanks for posting the pics guys, made my day.

I wish they had only orange and white lights and they made an alusion of the crown flutering so it would be like a real monarch. All as they have to do is get Orange and white lights and make them fade up and then down and by up and down I mean to sets one lower than the other. or one set on top of the crown and then it fades to the set below the crown.

How to get to Shepherd Mountain:

get on 360 and head towards the river. if youre coming from the south turn left right after you cross it. if youre coming from the north turn right just before you get to it (there is a light ~ courtyard drive). from there...just head up the hill.

When ever I see a picture of a building and a plane it sets a jolt through my heart. the texas tower pic with the plane resembles what we saw when the second plane hit the world trade center on tv. Those are awsome pics everyone and thanks for posting them. It just goes to show that five years after it happened we still all remeber that terrible day and those souls we lost. Also the brave heros that put there lives on the line so others could live.

You're right, it kind of does look like it's going to crash into the UT tower.

shanny, thanks for the directions... umm is there a public observation point somewhere or do you just have to take in the view from driving by in your car? i assume that is mostly a private residential area?

And when you come back down Courtyard Drive and get to the light at Loop 360, you can turn right (south) and stay in the emergency shoulder for about fifty feet and you'll come to a small parking area. Park there and you can hike up a short trail to the tops of the cliffs that overlook the bridge. When you get to the overlook, there's another trail that runs west along the cliffs overlooking the river. There's a chain link fence that's supposed to keep you from going too far west past the overlook, but someone thoughtfully cut a giant hole in it - so just walk on through and you can go about another half mile before the trail gets too rugged and you have to turn back.
