Seriously thought, I've always hated the fact they were going to tear down the neighbouring buildings. The only thing I like about the Lister is the continuity of the streetscape along King William and James.

I'm guessing LIUNA will now have no choice but to spend money (on the demolition and stability of other buildings) before they have a committment to build a replacement building.

Let's see how long they keep attempting to avoid spending money to shore up their buildings.

This makes me ill. Why exactly can't the city force LIUNA to either keep their property in good repair or sell it to someone who will [within a given timeframe]?

I still say that King William should be closed off to traffic between James and John and turned into an outdoor walking mall.

Lister Block continues to crumble

(Apr 17, 2008) - The  Lister Block continues to collapse this morning after police and firefighters were forced to evacuate five downtown properties last night.

it's already been pointed out but referring to the presently collapsing building as the lister block is misleading. yes, they're connected but they are distinct. all i know is it makes liuna's case for demolition much more attractive when the headline reads that way. and we all know what'll happen, right? they'll start taking down that building and...ooops! down goes lister. such a tired routine we continue play.

Honestly, what has been done on anyone's behalf to save this building in Hamilton? A lot of talk has occurred, but when it comes down to it no one has physically done anything to save these buildings. No wealthy person from the community has stepped in to offer a solution. No citizens group has got together to demand better property standards and upkeep. The whole process has been a destructive diatribe of 'he said vs. he said'. If you accept the status quo this is what happens.

I wouldn't agree entirely with that.
Citizen groups and the heritage group tried to pass a 'demolition by neglect' bylaw, but council refused.
What more can citizens do other than try to see proper bylaws in place and constantly call the cops when they see the property uncovered or being entered. I know people who do that all the time. Yet, the city still does nothing.
It shouldn't be up to a wealthy person in the community or local joe-blow's to save this place.
The property standards bylaws are in place. It's up to city hall to enforce them, even if it means daily notices and daily fines.
Money is all these chumps care about...start hitting their pocket-book everyday of the year and perhaps they'll start to obey the law.
If you or I break the law we get tossed in jail.
These guys break the law and get rewarded with fat contracts full of public money.
Welcome to western democracy.

Joe from LIUNA said he'll have a report tomorrow and he'll submit a demo permit this week and early next week demo will likely happen for the buildin to the East of the Lister Block.

Hopefully this will speed up a deal for the Lister Block.

It's a shame--I'm really disappointed to hear that this has happened--I always had high hopes for that piece of the Lister--and it is a key part of that great King William streetwall.

However, anyone on here who is seriously talking about sabotage and arson ought to take a deep breath and rethink their comments. Secondly, anyone who knows anything at all about Lister knows that it's construction (due to its age relative to the buildings around it) is completely unlike those buildings that abut it.

"hopefully this will speed up a deal for Lister Block"

of course it will...this is another one of their ways of holding the city hostage.
Now if the city walks away from the deal, LIUNA will paint them as the proponents of another Tivoli-type site. thugs.

This just reinforces my point nothing has been accomplished and nothing will change as a result of this.

Think about this and if it's not leading to sabotage

- The yellow caution tape that went up the same day
- The smell of gas (urban explorers wouldn't tinker with gas pipes) Why was the gas still connected? If I don't pay my gas bill it's shut off in month (is this public record? perhaps if a investigation is going to happen then someone should examine the gas bills, was it turned-off? recently connected? I doubt the city will investigate, can citizens ask for an investigation?)
- The speed at which it gets torn down, so that no fire investigators will examine
- The firefighters were prevented from entering the building at the time of explosion. Not even to see if people were inside.
- Bratina asked staff to investigate the building that day, scheduled inspection the next day -- but it was too late
- the many 'mysterious' fires inside Lister

and the biggest reason....
- MOTIVE, the fact that LIUNA and HI RISE have been wanting to tear down these buildings for years.

Sounds like a demo permit won't be needed. If it's declared an unsafe building than it has to be knocked down, no permit or council approval needed. Just like Tivoli.

I was actually on a walk last night b4 hearing about this and saw the cops shutting down the area. it wreaked of gas. I also want to know why an abandoned bldg would have gas running? I'm pissed.

(ps: I walked down to the area originally to check out the old-school fire hyrdant behind the Sirloin Cellar, but it was gone... does anyone knwo what happened to it?)
