Wow, I was thinking the same thing. 340 OTP is incredible. I went in the lobby about a month ago, and it looks amazing too. I bet we will have the same result when 600 N. Fairbanks is done too. Does anyone know what is going on with 560 N. Fairbanks?
I saw one building, just to the west of the Bice restaurant at 150 W. Ontario knocked down, but the other is still there (I thought they were demo'ing 2 buildings for that project?)

I'm guessing that the city seeks to avoid two major construction sites on the same block. Since rentals are hot right now, and they don't need pre-sales, this tower would likely go up fast after approval.

Vetro and Printers Corner is on the same block as well. . .

I think I disagree - certainly things have improved, and I guess it depends on what you consider to be "Streeterville," but isn't there still a surface lot just south of the river at Columbus, and a major surface lot between the Sheraton and Illinois, and a major surface lot between the NBC tower and Illinois, and a major surface lot just east of the Tribune Tower, and a major surface lot between Superior and Huron at McClurg, and is there anything planned yet for the surface lot east of McClurg, between Grand and Ohio?

Well Traditionally Streetville is everything North of the River, West and south of the lake, and East of Michigan. Even if you did consider the area south of the river and north of Grant park, that lot at Columbus is slated for a 900ish foot tower with a 20 story slot in it.

The Surface lot east of the NBC tower (north of the sheriton and south of Illinois is where Carley is looking at building a 70 some story tower that would eat of 2/3 of that parking lot.

That Mcclurg site needs to have something built on it and will probably be the only lot left in what I consider to truely be Streeterville. In regards to the plethora of lots West of NBC, I've always kinda considered that a different part of the city than Streeterville though it technically is Streeterville. I guess that area just has more of a retail and commercial feel to it so I don't lump it in with the Residential Streeterville Area. But you are right about those lots, if we really consider that Streeterville then those lots need to be built out to say Streeterville is full.

Also, that lot at the end of Mcclurg I think is owned by Northwestern and will probably become part of the hospital campus in the not so distant future.

Agreed - I'm also glad to see progress on the Staybridge Suites building which will look pretty cool when finished.

Big projects may be pulled back to earth

High-end residential developments in Chicago and around the country feel the squeeze as lenders turn cautious in global credit crunch

By Susan Diesenhouse | Tribune staff reporter
September 26, 2007

The developer of the proposed Chicago Spire will host a preview and party for the global press Wednesday, but the celebratory mood could be dampened by the worldwide credit crunch and a postponement of the tower's preconstruction sales.

Project about to head out of the K Station

REAL ESTATE | Two towers northwest of Loop on one-time railroad land are nearing construction, thanks to a strong market in rental housing

September 26, 2007

BY DAVID ROEDER Sun-Times Columnist

Covering what was lately excess railroad land, Fifield Cos.'s K Station immediately northwest of the Loop is one of downtown's largest long-term projects. It's taking a huge step forward, courtesy of strength in the market for rental housing.

General Growth is the former Morton Salt Building at 150 N. Wacker, the five-story building visible behind the blue crane.

General Growth is a real estate company (owner of big malls, mostly) and not blind to the possibilities their building site offers.

Not sure if this will end up being 12+ stories or not...

Developer plans boutique hotel in West Loop
By Alby Gallun

(Crain’s) — A South Carolina developer has jumped into the crowded downtown hotel market by buying a West Loop property where it plans to build a boutique hotel.

An affiliate of Greenville, S.C.-based JHM Hotels Inc. has paid $4.1 million for an 11,700-square-foot parcel at 150 N. Jefferson St. near the Ogilvie Transportation Center, according to documents filed with the Cook County Recorder.

Have any renders been released for these two building, yet? Hopefully they are nicer looking than Allure!

There's a render in the print version of the Sun-Times.

The towers aren't much better than Allure, but their massing is much more urban (no huge extending parking podium, and no street setback). But they're still some weird combination of Art Deco and Miesian Modernism that only P/H could produce.

Kinzie Station Site A

^ No kidding. Aesthetically, a tremendously wasted opportunity. What is it with P/H? How can there be more than 1 person on this planet who finds this "contemporary deco" schlock to be the least bit pleasing?? I would personally take 100 more SCB towers with the repetitive horizontal banding than 1 more of these bulky-looking, fortress-like facades from P/H. I'd love to find out what hack within the firm is such a proponent of this dreck....

^^^

Well those aren't that bad. I was expecting it to be much worse. Those would be great towers if they were entirely clad in limestone like a real art deco tower!
