Earlier this week, I noticed that there was a backhoe sitting on top of the old building on the north end of the Quad being demoed from the inside. Kind of strange. Was that the old Ag-For building? I'm not sure, but that's what I remember from seeing those outdated campus maps at the U of A LRT Station.

Looks like the CCIS (Centennial Centre for Interdisciplinary Science) is to go up in its place.

I spent an hour watching that on friday morning. Coming back from the Oil game on wednesday I was tempted to find a way up and fire up the excavator. The keys are ALWAYS under the seats on those things.

I know they are recycling the steel beams and trusses. I am unsure if any other building components are being salvaged.

I definately won't miss those hard wooden seats in that Gawd Awful V-wing. I had a three hour night class there, and man, you really needed a pillow for back support

Winner gets a thousand dollar shopping spree at Heritage Mall.

My girlfriend was telling me about some customers who were opening up a winebar on 103 and Jasper Ave. I don't recall hearing anything about this here, or on c2e. Anybody know where exactly?

They told here two floors in an existing building....ING perhaps? I can't really picture what is on the south side of jasper and if there is any vacant space.

/\ That's what wine bars are all about, intimacy.

I have only heard of the one on 104 Street.

Yeah, I've heard of the one opening up on 104. Thats why when she first told me about it I asked her if it was that one. She said she didn't know but would confirm the next time they were in. Well, she did.

These people are from Calgary so maybe they got the street mixed up....

Province provides building at no charge (5 p.m.)
Costs of original proposal called excessive
Gordon Kent, edmontonjournal.com
Published: Friday, December 08, 2006
The soaring cost of Edmonton’s new biotechnology centre is expected to be eased following a move by the provincial government to provide it with a building at virtually no charge.

The centre is intended to make the city a Canadian biotech powerhouse by providing offices and subsidized “wet” labs, with sinks and other equipment, to help small companies get established, Edmonton Economic Development Corp. vice-president Myron Borys said today.

But bids to construct the facility came in around $28 million earlier this year, far more than the revised $19.2 million budget approved by city council last April, he said.

Font: ****The original price set in 2004 was $14.2 million.

“The costs were really excessive. We turned our minds to some other alternatives,” Borys said.

“Conversion of an existing facility will be much cheaper.”

The EEDC is now negotiating to take over space becoming available at the Edmonton Research Park in a building used by Biomira, which develops vaccines for cancer treatment.

While Borys didn’t want to go into specifics until the proposal is presented to city council on Tuesday, city manager Al Maurer said the province would provide the site for $1 a year.

That increased assistance is in addition to $2.5 million each which the Alberta and federal governments have already agreed to contribute, he said.

Even with renovation expenses, this would cut the total price to $11.5 million, he said.

“It’s a really positive move forward.”

Civic affairs writer Gordon Kent will have a full report on the biotechnology centre in Saturday’s Journal.

Heritage Mall: Brings back memories. I grew up in the area, but haven't put a foot in the mall in 8 years. I loved the long flat escalators in the Walmart (Wolco before, or was it Woodwards?) that you could bring your shopping cart up. (Just like Urban Fare in Yaletown for the Parkade)

Pop. Stats: Remember, this is all based on June/July '06 info when the canvassers were out. Just a reminder.

OK... here are numbers randomly calculated after carefully reading tea leaves, and examining the entrails of a mountain goat.
Edmonton (City only) - 798,123
Edmonton CMA - 1,000,012

So I know we were talking about lattice (sp?) work on here a week or two ago. I found two examples that I think speak volumes to the era of architecture. I can see people loving or hating it equally. As for me, I'm torn now. The jury here is still out. (Unlike Micheal White's...) [ooohhh...current events zing]

^I remember Kaden Tower (?I think?) from the ugliest building in the world poll we had. No, it didn't win.

I always liked the lattice in the Professional Building in Edmonton. What I didn't like about it was the tent entrance added to the front of the building that had no relation to the orignal concept. The professional building was very unique for Edmonton and I'm a bit sad to see that style of architecture disappear from Edmonton's building stock. Being devil's advocate with myself here, I know the lattice on the Professional Building would not have worked well for residential use. Who really wants to live in a cage?
