Yeah, there is a lot to work with. Its just when you look at celebrated cities like New Orleans, Savannah, Charleston, etc... - who would have thought that we might have been even greater. I think we could still be up there as long as right type of development and restoration keeps up - but its really depressing when you think of all that's lost. Everytime I walk pass the parking lot on the corner of St. Francis, and Conception, I can't help think of what it would be like if the Cawthorn Hotel were still there - or the McGill institute, that used to be at Government and Joachim. The list goes on and on. Barton will probably be on the list too, if things keep up.

I was downtown in Bienville Square today for the chili cookoff. I was suprised to see that a lot of framework has gone up for RSA's crown. Here are some pics as of today (Feb. 4th):

Dang dirty windshield...The frame is already starting to curve.

i had a wierd dream that an RSA clone and two little siblings (like the King and Queen in Sandy Springs) were built in Inverness, plus there was a bunch of infill to sort of link them. i was pissed they were built in the suburbs and not the CBD.

Hmm...I don't know. It was so crowded it was kind of hard to get around and see everything. I did get to taste six or seven different chilis though.

the winner was a group from U of South Alabama, i believe. my personal favorite was wintzell's. it was kinda sweet and tangy, plus they topped it with cheese. i'm a sucker for cheese... but the event was a lot of fun.

I know this is not a recent pic. I took it back in August when I went on one of the cruises. It was taken from the cruise ship as we were pulling away, down Mobile river.

Thanks for the great photos jmbreland!! I am planning on making it down for the MOT's later in the month and hope that the crown is even further along by then!! Also, I hope that they start construction on the Maritime Center sometimes this year. This will be a very cool place and really look great on the waterfront!! With all of the new crowns, the Maritime Center, "sail-shaped" pedestrian bridge, Governemnt Plaza, convention center and crusie ships, the Downtown Mobile skyline will really become very interesting!!! This is not even counting the Water Street Landing, the proposed addition to the Admiral Semmes or the unknowns!!
