When are we going to have ocean farms of seaweed, microalgae & mangrove for biodiesel? Is there any startup in Silicon Beach working on ocean farming? Integrating ocean farming (such as seaweed aquaculture and fish farming) with offshore wind and solar farms creates highly efficient multi-use ocean platforms. This synergy maximizes the use of marine space, shares costly grid infrastructure, and fosters thriving, protected marine ecosystems. ~The first offshore solar and seaweed farm in the North Sea, How Offshore Solar Could be the Future of Energy. Below is the Udayavani news on Karnataka's Districts as Export Hubs (DEH). I think Hassan/Hasana is paired with Dakshina Kannada or Mangaluru port & Belgaum/Belagavi is paired with Goa port. Probably Goa-Belagavi corridor will be extended to the other monstrous city namely Hyderabad. And DK-Hasana corridor will be an extension of the two monstrous cities in the east through Kolar. Probably Tumkur/Tumakuru will also be a part of this corridor in the future. As such the central government plan is to promote all districts of the country as export hubs hence Udupi & Kasargod will also be parts of this corridor in the near future.

Site selection for cavern-based SPR facilities also depends on proximity to existing pipeline infrastructure, coastal access for crude import logistics, and the depth of suitable rock formations. Mangaluru scores well across all three criteria, which is a major reason the site is being selected for the Phase-I Extension rather than a greenfield location.
From urban vulnerability point of view, Visakhapatnam is widely considered the more secure and strategically protected port against enemy attacks compared to Mangalore. Visakhapatnam Port is naturally protected and landlocked, making it inherently shielded from direct sea attacks and extreme weather. But the reserach paper here, considering all kinds of risks, puts New Mangalore port in the medium-risk category by identifying it as the seventh riskiest port whereas Visakhapatnam is the fourth riskiest port in India. Goa & Kamarajar are least riskiest ports in India. Although Goa may be having suitable rock formations it doesn't have crude oil refinery. Karwar with naval base & natural protection may be a better option to have crude oil storage & refinery facility.

Eight maritime clusters in India: Key port-led development zones for investors

4. Karnataka Cluster (New Mangalore Port)

The maritime cluster anchored by New Mangalore Port in Karnataka serves as the state’s gateway to the Arabian Sea and a central driver of port-led development along the western coast. As the port completes 50 years of service, it has marked a major milestone by signing MoUs worth approximately ₹52,000 crore during India Maritime Week 2025, with major corporates including Mangalore Refinery & Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL), Aegis Vopak, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) and Reliance Industries Ltd, signalling large-scale investment interest in port infrastructure, logistics and energy value-chains.[9]
Is Reliance Industries Ltd investing in Petroleum & Petrochemicals sector or Renewable Energy sector including Green Hydrogen & Offshore Solar/Wind Farms or Data Park & IT sector or totally new ESDM sector?
I don't expect Reliance Industries Ltd to invest in crude oil storage here in Mangaluru but they may try to store LPG & Natural Gas (with LNG terminal?).

Is proposed Plastic Park (one more may be coming up in Adyapady) going to use LNG (or Green Hydrogen) as a chemical feedstock (the raw material for creating plastics) or as a clean-burning thermal fuel? As per earlier intimation main feedstock for Ganjimutt Plastic Park is polypropylene from MRPL. Using Green Hydrogen will be equivalent to using water along with electricity.

Also not sure how many from the above are or will be having physical VLSI chip fabrication (foundries) & packaging (assembly) facilities.

NIT-K proposes Research, Innovation, and Technology Enterprise Park on campus
Quote:
The National Institute of Technology-Karnataka (NIT-K), Surathkal, has proposed setting up a research, innovation, and technology enterprise (RITE) park on its campus, its Director B. Ravi said on Friday.

Speaking at the Silicon Beach Dialogue Series, organised by Silicon Beach Program, an initiative aimed at transforming coastal Karnataka into a major technology and innovation hub, the director said the park had been proposed on 1.5 lakh sq. ft. at a cost of ₹440 crore.

Meanwhile, the proceedings of the 66th meeting of the Finance Committee of NIT-K held on April 6, 2026, stated: “The committee resolved to direct the institute to review its lease deed with NITK-Science, Technology and Entrepreneur’s Park (STEP) Society and amend the deed, with the consent of the STEP board, to enable repossessing of the land for RITE Park and other purposes of the institute.”

NIT-K had leased 20 acres of land on the western side of the campus to NITK-STEP in 1994 for 50 years to establish STEP, which was registered as a society. So far, less than five acres have been utilised for STEP, it said.

What about Adani University planned as a part of 500 acres Aerocity in the vacant land belonging to MIA? My advice to Adani Group is to have a mega Business Park as a part of Aerocity & shift Adani University to Universtiy Township if it materializes.

google "how to avoid water drainage out from tunnel road & affecting forest trees"
Quote:
To protect forest trees from tunnel road drainage, the primary goal is to manage, treat, and slow down runoff rather than letting concentrated water erode tree root zones or introduce harmful pollutants (like oil or de-icing salts) into the forest ecosystem.
  1. Intercept and Control Runoff Volume
    • Seepage Control: Ensure the tunnel interior features an effective waterproof membrane and peripheral drainage system to control the ingress of rock and groundwater. This prevents unnatural depletions or overflows that can dry out or waterlog the surrounding forest.
    • Energy Dissipaters & Check Dams: Do not let tunnel water discharge directly onto bare slopes. Install rock rip-rap or concrete velocity dissipaters at discharge points to slow the water and prevent deep gully erosion.
    • Level Spreaders: Use level spreaders at the mouth of the tunnel to convert concentrated, high-velocity pipe flows into shallow, slow-moving "sheet flow" that safely percolates through the forest floor.
  2. Filter and Treat Contaminants
    • Vegetated Swales & Filter Strips: Route tunnel drainage into bio-retention swales (shallow channels filled with native vegetation and sandy soil). The plants and soil naturally filter out pollutants, heavy metals, and oils before the water reaches deep forest roots.
    • Sediment Basins: Build sedimentation or oil-grit interceptors near the tunnel portals to catch debris, silt, and chemicals before they are dispersed into the forest soil.
  3. Protect Tree Root Zones
    • Perforated French Drains: If you need to route drainage lines through the forest floor near trees, use perforated pipes wrapped in geotextile fabric. This allows water to slowly seep into the soil at a manageable rate.
    • Root Barriers: Install physical root barriers (vertical high-density polyethylene, or HDPE, panels) along concrete drainage trenches to stop tree roots from clogging or damaging the drainage system.
  4. Directing to Natural Channels
    • Cross-Drainage Systems: Use cross drains and culverts to guide surface water safely away from the tunnel crown and discharge it into established natural gullies or streams, preventing unnatural flooding of localized tree stands.
google "Shiradi Ghat proposed tunnel: how to avoid water drainage out from tunnel road & affecting forest trees"
Quote:
To prevent water drainage from the proposed Shiradi Ghat tunnel from adversely affecting the local forest trees and groundwater table, engineering designs must incorporate watertight tunnel lining and controlled subterranean water redirection. These methods ensure the hydrology of the Western Ghats remains balanced. ~Deccan Chronicle

Specific and localized techniques to achieve this include:
  • Watertight Concrete Lining: Employing high-performance, impermeable concrete segments (precast) and waterproofing membranes to seal the tunnel walls completely. This prevents groundwater from seeping into the tunnel cavity and keeps the local aquifers intact.
  • Grouting and Cavity Sealing: Pre-injection grouting (injecting cement or chemical grout into the rock mass before excavation) fills existing fractures and fissures in the bedrock, stopping water from draining out of the mountain.
  • Controlled Infiltration/Regulated Drainage: If minor seepage occurs, it should be collected via closed, engineered drainage channels along the tunnel edges, rather than allowing it to run along the roadbed.
  • Subsurface Water Recharging: Instead of discharging the collected tunnel water far away into surface streams, it can be directed to specialized retention and recharge basins built near the tunnel portals. This safely distributes the water back to the soil, ensuring forest tree roots and flora in the upper regions of the Ghats continue to receive natural moisture.
  • Detailed Hydrogeological Mapping: Conducting rigorous geological surveys prior to blasting to locate natural underground water pockets. Tunnels can then be aligned or constructed using specific tunneling methods (like the New Austrian Tunneling Method 2 3 4 5) that support the roof while minimizing the disturbance to the local water table.
Has NHAI incorporated these preventive measures in their proposal? What would be the total cost of tunnel road construction if these measures are incorporated?

google says there there is no singular 'National Institute' for tunneling, but several premier organizations and universities have established dedicated research and training hubs across the country like MIT World Peace University (MIT-WPU), Pune, Tunnelling Excellence Academy (TEA), Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) Academy, New Delhi have tunneling experts. I think google ignored George Fernandes Institute of Tunnel Technology (GFITT). By the way, Mangaluru lost one more Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) project (Germany’s Herrenknecht AG) to Chennai recently due to lethergic state government. As such Mangaluru has lost many of heavy engineering projects to Chennai-Tiruvallur belt in recent years due to the state government's lethargy.
