This is not true.

I get the whole data sovereignty argument, but maintaining a reliable power grid is pretty important too.

Why? It's business for them. And they are racking and stacking connection requests like they would for any large industrial user.

The problems here are:

1) Complacency from a long period of time where demand didn't grow.
2) Under investment and revenue extraction by the city. Why the heck is Hydro Ottawa paying a dividend when they need the cash to grow?

Also, in the particular case of Ottawa, so much of the data centre growth here is tied to government and defence use. Every other thread, y'all want to talk about how the feds aren't delivering for Ottawa. And yet here want to deny the infrastructure growth that is considered basic infrastructure going forward? Y'all keep piling up reasons for the federal government and supporting industries to divert investment. Don't be surprised when you get exactly what you keep advocating for.

Long story short, it's for peak demand and power outages. They estimate they will be used 30 days a year, 120 hours per year.

It's a little concerning that the City feels the need to have backup to reduce the strain on Hydro Ottawa, when Hydro Ottawa is about to accept hooking-up 34 projects representing 86% of the current average system load.

Why is OC Transpo installing natural gas generators for a zero-emission bus project?

The pair of four-megawatt generators are expected to be installed at the 1500 St-Laurent Blvd. garage by September.
