the NDP should jump on this if they are smart. clearly sask can’t afford not to dramatically raise it’s current tax rate with this and the cuts to saskatoon’s already extremely core low end budget. this must be the longest time in the provinces history that overpasses haven’t been constructed since the inception of overpasses… yeesh what a mess

Public feedback sought on future 8th Street train crossing plans in Saskatoon

By Lara Fominoff
CKOM
Mar 5, 2025

Saskatoon’s 8th Street is going to look a lot different in the next few years for those living in the Brighton, Briarwood, College Park East and Rosewood areas.

The city wants feedback on two options: to build an overpass over or an underpass under the CP-KC tracks at Wess Road.

That railway is used daily, so I have to think that a roadway overpass is the only real option. I can’t imagine the rail companies could deal with the downtime involved with installing a train bridge in the underpass option. Plus, there’s the challenges with storm water associated with an underpass.

A Saskatoon intersection where drivers often take the shoulder to bypass traffic backlogs was approved for upgrades at city council.

On Wednesday, council approved new functional designs to the 22nd Street and Confederation Drive intersection, aimed at helping the flow of traffic.

The report before council was largely focused on the Fairmont Drive access, which allows vehicles to get onto 22nd Street.

City exploring options to improve access to 22nd Street West for Fairhaven residents

by Brody Langager
Saskatoon Star Phoenix
Mar 26, 2025

Changes are likely coming to roadways in the Fairhaven neighbourhood, with the intention of increasing ease of access to and from 22nd Street West.

A recommendation in a report going to city council in Wednesday’s meeting proposes the Fairmont Drive right turn into 22nd Street West be changed into a right turn out from 22nd Street West.

A right turn out into 22nd Street West would be created a couple streets away at Fairlight Crescent. An additional lane would also be created further up the road at the eastbound turn on to 22nd Street West from Diefenbaker Drive.

‘Close my eyes and just pump on the gas’: Saskatoon to change unique intersection at Broadway Bridge

By Keenan Sorokan
CTV News
May 12, 2025

Six months of construction began on the Broadway Bridge Monday, and the project is set to remove a bit of motoring history in Saskatoon.

As part of the project, the intersection of 4th Avenue South and 19th Street East will change to a traditional “T” intersection to allow for overall safety improvements and make way for a future bus rapid transit route.

The right northbound flow-through lane on the bridge will be removed, traffic signals will be relocated, pedestrian signals will be added, and the island and centre medians will be removed.

Saskatoon’s Broadway Bridge expected to reopen this fall, on budget: city

By Stacey Hein
CTV News
September 25, 2025

The Broadway Bridge is on track to reopen before the end of October and remains on budget, according to the city of Saskatoon.

The 93-year-old bridge has been closed since May for major repairs.

Drivers and pedestrians have had to detour, and some businesses on Broadway Avenue say the closure has hurt their bottom line.

Saskatoon details major road and bridge projects for the year

By Sherri Solomko / Freelance Reporter
SaskToday
Sep 26, 2025

SASKATOON — With a race against the prairie frost, Saskatoon is pushing ahead on dozens of road and transit projects, including the rehabilitation of the Broadway Bridge, as construction season nears its close.

The City of Saskatoon’s Transportation and Construction Division responded to inquiries from SaskToday regarding road construction season.

“Construction season is short on the Prairies, so the City of Saskatoon strives to get as much done as possible during the spring and summer months. On top of typical road maintenance projects, we also shut down a major bridge and we're building dozens of Link station platforms.”

By Brody Langager

Changes are coming to the neighbourhood just south of the University of Saskatchewan following work on the Link bus rapid transit system.

Transportation Committee in favour of overpass on 8th Street

By Keira Miller
CJWW Radio
Feb 3, 2026

A recommendation to build an overpass at 8th street and the CKCP rail was well received by Saskatoon’s transportation committee with very little discussion.

Director of Technical Services Dan Willems presented the recommendation at Tuesday’s meeting.

“The overpass option raises 8th Street over the rail line and avoids major utility and rail relocation requirements to construct it, although it does introduce additional visual and noise impacts to the surrounding area. The total cost estimate for the overpass option is $54 million.”

Police lay charges as city looks to recover repair cost of 4 damaged overpasses

By Keenan Sorokan and Rory MacLean
CTV News
March 26, 2026

The City of Saskatoon estimates it will cost at least $900,000 to repair four damaged overpasses and one bridge in the last three weeks, and there’s no telling if the city will be fully reimbursed for the damages.

“We’ve recognized this trend, and we’re all frustrated with the trend,” city solicitor Cindy Yelland said.

City council received an update after oversized loads damaged four different overpasses in the city, and a fire inside the University Bridge, where repairs are estimated at $870,000.

Doesn't surprise me with the number of incidents.

Truckers have no clue to the weight and dimensions when it comes to their loads. Maybe it's time to toughen the laws, make them accountable for the repairs.
