I use to feel this way about Phoenix for as long as I can remember. I feel like it has a lot to do with culture and money. One, Phoenix, despite having a somewhat sensible melting pot of sorts, lacks the actual historical and cultural diversity that perpetuates urban core living into years and decades in the future.
Gentrification is one thing, sure, but it almost seems like ASU and the constant change and flux of new age students will, to some extent, consistently gentrify for the next big thing. E.g. Arizona Center, Cityscape, Roro.. it seems as if Phoenix has no real historical culture of urban living, and the old money is very persuasive in keeping single family homes were they aren't necessarily fitting and call that history. Let's hope for now..
There is history throughout the valley by the way!
ASU needs to STOP being the focal point of a downtown! Realistically if a true urban city is forever going to remain in motion, it needs walkability, trees, actual pedestrian friendly streets, culture, hubs, major corporations, HQ's, the IT HQ like, idk? Something global, financial or tech even! How about revitalize the warehouse district and keep the hood in it while you do so! Art, shows, nightlife, Street Art!
And none of this marketing off central ideals, like, "hey pull into this lot, there's a bougie restaurant with no culture or diversity here because only those with, quote on quote, respectable wealth.. end quote and "it now", or people with a local employee discount can afford to be here," There is also a huge garage and no underground parking, but hey there's a historical bus stop below hance park if you're really into that sort of thing" Until next time..!!!
And then those people get bored and leave, and head for the 303 and the cycle repeats...
But hey, when in Phoenix LOL
That is my theory anyway, I'm sure there is credence somewhere along those lines.
I wonder what ever happened to that proposal on the NE corner of Indian and Central? Something like 6 towers?
Anyway The Whitney will be another addition. I just hope it revamps the area and doesn't host more mom and pop antique shops and nail salons for the residents. Don't these people drive? I mean it is Phoenix afterall
