The media has become so careless, in this piece by Global News: A look inside Portage Place construction they mistakenly use renderings of the Hudson Bay redevelopment.

Global is bad for that as they don't produce news product in Winnipeg anymore. The talent is still here to read the prompter, but all the back office is done by remote control from Global master control in Toronto.

The news for Regina uses the Winnipeg talent with Toronto production staff to save money as well.

Old Market Square. Let's have our own "Vancouver Steam Clock".

I was thinking this intersection for the clock. Seems pretty central in the Exchange, and it 's always a center point during Nuit Blanche, Fringe Fest, JazzFest, etc.

I agree it's an excellent location.

Here's one of my dreams for that location: one of those old railway car diners you see in movies. Mickey's Diner in St.Paul would be an example of what I'm talking about. Maybe not as "retro-kitchy" as that one, but pretty close.

like the Jackson Hole Diner in New York? That would be pretty great tbh. It's a great corner. Bodegoes was a good spot until they got kicked out and they demolished the building in the photo. Glad they were still able to find a spot near by beside Amsterdam Tea House

Anyone know if its just the clock face, or will the chime (gongs and hammers) be part of the relocation as well?

How often was that functioning when it was in Portage Place?

It is the building next to Johnny G's right? The CentreVenture Release says 179 McDermot, which is the building next door. Johnny G's was at 177 McDermot.

A damn shame that flatiron new build fell through. Maybe the developer can dust it off with HAF money around.

Yes, 179, the developer owns that building, their head office is (or was) located in this building.

I liked it too, but I think there was a lot of push-back with how modern it looked. Would love to have a modern flat-iron design at Notre Dame x Ellice x Garry St tho.

I may have posted this before and if so, apologies, but my sister used to work in environmental consulting and said the former Bodegoes plot is dangerously contaminated with petrochemicals from a garage that used to be on the site. The demolition of the building and the cancellation of that flatiron proposal probably resulted from that discovery. It would make that area a good candidate for the Portage Place clock though.

I hadn't heard that but it makes sense considering the site was a gas station and garage for half a century. Kind of like the same situation as the Stradbrook and Osborne lot needing remediation. It would be a good location for the clock and a little public gathering area.

its possible that remediation would need to happen, but that wasn't the reason the owner bailed.....which reminds me that I have to send my annual e-mail to the councilor to ask her why parking is still illegally happening on the site.

191-219 Main Street has been designated an impacted site by Manitoba Conservation and been under a remediation plan since November 2020.
