I wish there was still a bookstore in every mall and a toy store.

Yeah that map was awesome. I think the Sherwood Village anchors were The Met department store and Saan maybe. I think the grocery store was added later. They always had an awesome Christmas display in the mall and I remember going into Benson's to watch a band when I was 18 too. lol

I've lived in the Northwest forever so Sherwood Village and Normanview bring back lots of memories. Normanview had the Nook restaurant and a Rock of Ages record store. I also hung out at the Buffalo Bill's arcade quite a bit. I'm pretty sure the OK Economy was the only big tenant when they opened. They added the Zellers at the far end a few years later. It kind of just ended at a hardware store at that end until Zellers opened. Northgate was Safeway and Woolco at opposite ends. I seem to remember a smaller department store called Robinson's in that mall back in the 70s or 80s. I think it may have had a cafeteria in the back as well.

Historical Regina Facebook page. There are also interior photos posted from 1976 if you search "Southland".

My memories from the 1980's
Sherwood Village Mall:
Work World
Saan
Coop Hardware with the cafeteria at the back
Hans Christian Anderson Toys
Flower Shop
Arcade (with the Shady outdoor entrance only with no windows)
2 Banks (TD and Sherwood Credit Union)
Shoppers
Coop Grocery
Music Store
Hallmark Card Store
Camera Store (Maybe Japan Camera?)

Normanview:
Zellers
OK Economy
Jim Elams Sporting Goods
Liquor Store (in the Mall)
Marks Work Warehouse
Music Equipment Store

North Gate:
Marathon Sports (I think where Shoppers is now)
Forzani's (Where Dollarama is now)
Woolco (Then Walmart, Zellers, Target, Lowes)
Safeway
Dairy Queen
BiRite Drugs (I can still sing the jingle)
The Little B
San Francisco's
The Sony Store

I drove past Toys R Us this morning and noticed a large For Sale sign on the property, stating retail opportunity for a big box store. Does anyone know what's up with that?

I hadn't heard any plans to close. Maybe they are trying to fill parking lot space that is too big for Toys R Us these days.

Jysk has moved to the old Sears Home building on Quance. Now, they have divided a chunk of the east side of the store for Dollarama. Not sure if this is a new one or moving over from the VicSq Morgue cluster of buildings.

I drove thru Regina over the weekend and stopped at the costco gas. I was impressed how much new development has occur on the east part of Victoria street. I feel there more retail there since the last time i was there in 2019.

A bit of information on Toys 'R Us, although not much.

Toys 'R' Us Canada closes at least 38 stores this year, puts another 12 up for sale

Regina is up for sale, so not flat out closing, but I am guessing that is probably it for Toys R Us here in the near future.

Cornwall Centre Opens Regina Police Office Downtown

https://retail-insider.com/retail-in...259hlGPpcX7PSQ

The centre tied the safety initiative to its recent and upcoming leasing activity. JD Sports opened and has “done nothing but boost productivity,” Dockham said, while Reitmans returned to the core after consolidating elsewhere in the city. For 2026, Cornwall confirmed Hot Topic, Unique Bunny, and MINISO.

“Progress is also emerging in large-format space. Urban Planet occupies the entire second level of the former Sears box, with Ardene on the lower level. Dockham said there is strong interest in about 30,000 square feet that remain. The former Hudson’s Bay department store, which closed earlier in 2025, also represents a major redevelopment opportunity in the core. Cornwall Centre confirmed there has been significant interest in the site from potential tenants and developers, though details have not yet been announced.”

Stormer, please delete this tasteless, unhumourous remark. The Cornwall Centre, and the downtown in general, is struggling, and don't need comments like this.
I expect better comments than this from you!

Yes, the head in the sand approach is much better.

The Food Court is once again totally filled. Last week, Oh! Delhi opened, and this week, Freshly Squeezed opened.
Sorry, no photos. The fire alarms were ringing Saturday around noon. They became Level 2, so shoppers were advised to leave. The alarms were cancelled shortly after that announcement. I didn't smell smoke, but I left anyway.

Blair Forster says he has secured a grocery store tenant for Horizons in Westerra. I assume it will be another Safeway like in Aurora.
