Thanks for the rundown with the bonus thumbnails. I don’t usually see Calgary construction here very often consider how busy it is out there. My impression is there is always 5-10 high rises under contraction in the core at any given time.

That's pretty accurate. In the past 20 years 99 highrises (buildings over 10 floors) have been built in downtown Calgary (CBD, Beltline, EV)

That's an average of 5 highrises per year, but with buildings taking at least 2 years or longer to complete, I would say on average there are about 10 highrises u/c in downtown Calgary at any time.

Currently there are 10 u/c and thus true to the average

Work is underway to add 10 stories to an existing highrise built only a few years ago. They seem to have reached the 7th story.

The developer wanted to go taller, but the city imposed a height restriction for the area—which, oddly enough, has since been overruled for a 16-storey tower as part of the Market Lands redevelopment a few blocks away to the west.
  • The Market Lands project (redeveloping the former Public Safety Building and Civic Centre Parkade site) has a standard zoning height limit of about 100 feet (~10 storeys).
  • City planners initially recommended rejecting a variance for a proposed 16-storey (168-foot) residential tower in phase two of the project, citing inconsistency with the area's character.
  • The developer appealed, arguing the extra height was needed for more affordable housing units.
  • In July 2025, the city's property committee unanimously approved the appeal, effectively overruling the restriction for this specific tower (allowing ~148 units, many below market rates).

Q Tower | 197.4m | 59s | Lifetime | Wallman l site shoring

GameOnBrad

Rendering is so soul-less, the actual build may have a shot at looking a bit better. And the tower is set back a ways from Queens Quay and will be hemmed in a bit by better looking buildings lol.

UT

A least the giant parking garage that stained the waterfront was demolished to make way for the mixed use residential (condo and rental) and retail tower. I wonder if they upped the rental element and reduced the condos... since it's starting. Below is the garage halfway demolished.

The exterior refurbishment of the original pods and pedestrian bridge is complete and the entire Therme site looks prepped for construction.

Not one specific site in this pic, but the 5 towers shown in the thumbnails will be rising into this frame. You can see 4 of the cranes, with the 5th crane coming soon.

Here are a few select reposts from the excellent Developments Halifax. These are from inner city areas outside downtown from the past few weeks. I thought they all showed something interesting about how the city is developing.

The basically brand new Almon/Robie skyline visible from the Citadel across the Commons

The area is only semi-finished but is really growing up. This is going to get widened to 4 lanes with one BRT lane each direction (that's why the building by the May St sign is set back); I could see it being turned into an LRT corridor.

Gottingen/Brunswick area with visible coloured paneling on modern projects meant to mimic the older wooden houses. That crane isn't for the concrete tower visible behind it, it's for a project in the foreground.

Dutch Village Rd is coalescing into a medium density neighbourhood

King's Wharf in Dartmouth also accelerating a bit with some lowrise, the highise to the left, then a new highrise being started (Brightwork)

Dartmouth bridge area. This is the "old" round of construction; there is excavation happening for a new round of 30-40 storey buildings.

One Delisle's balcony pattern creates a corkscrew. Normally, I'm a less is better type but, this addition incorporates balconies through enhancing the overall form. Well done.
