I-90 through Washington was also closed due to flood-induced mudslides. It’s not exactly easy to build against these types of problems.

I heard that the Malahat upgrade / median divider project through Goldstream Park has been cancelled.

Honestly not surprised. Pathetic how little can be built.

From the BC Government News post:

Quote:
Plans paused for Goldstream median barrier widening project
Planning underway for future Malahat (Highway 1) upgrades

Summary
  • Province not proceeding with the Goldstream median barrier widening project
  • More analysis is needed to address environmental considerations in Goldstream Park
  • An update of the Malahat Highway 1 Safety Review, including a review of crash data, will be completed later in 2026

__________

The Province is not proceeding with the Goldstream median barrier widening project at this time, as additional work is required to address environmental considerations in this sensitive area of Goldstream Park.

Additional analysis is required to understand potential environmental impacts of the project in the Goldstream Park area. This work will inform any future decisions about upgrades in this section of the corridor, as well as prioritize this work within the recommendations for future highway upgrades.

The Ministry of Transportation and Transit will continue to work with its maintenance contractors, emergency responders and the RCMP to support safe and reliable travel throughout the corridor.

Planning for future Malahat safety improvements

The Ministry of Transportation and Transit will update its 2012 Highway 1 Malahat Safety Review to reflect current conditions, including a review of crash data, to help prioritize future short-, medium- and long-term improvements along the corridor. This work will be completed later in 2026.

More than half of the Malahat corridor is protected with permanent concrete median barriers dividing oncoming traffic.
In areas where these barriers are not in place, such as within Goldstream Park, flexible centreline delineators will remain installed.
These delineators help improve safety by clearly defining lane boundaries, reducing the risk of head-on collisions and improving visibility in poor weather or low-light conditions.

Engagement with First Nations and interest holders

The Ministry of Transportation and Transit has been in discussions with First Nations and interest holders through the project’s planning process and will continue doing so as it updates the corridor study.

Quick Facts:

The corridor study update will be completed within existing ministry operating budgets. Funding previously earmarked for Goldstream improvements will be reallocated to other transportation priorities. The Malahat corridor is a key connection between communities on southern Vancouver Island.

That's a long way to say cancelled (at least for any short to mid term time frames).

The project has already gone through years and years of studies and consultations.

It isn't even adding any lanes (which is insane) in order to bend over backwards for the environmental concerns of the park.

What more can be studied / done to mitigate for the environment? (and of course we have to throw in the local natives for it too).

Honestly, BC must have the most red tape for infrastructure projects in the nation, perhaps the world.

Hilariously minor roadway and transit projects here seem to frequently get stuck in decades of studies. (For example, another project consisting of two interchanges in Kelowna has now spent 8 years in the "planning" stages...).

All it takes is to go anywhere else in NA to realize what a joke our highway infrastructure is in BC.

It might be good that the Malahat project got cancelled since it wouldn’t widen TCH to 4 lanes anyway.

Really cool video of a great project... now if only the twinning in Yoho Park could start moving forward...

Interesting proposal about linking Vancouver and Prince Rupert.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/vancouver-prince-rupert-highway-proposed-9.7247905

I'd be curious as to how far inland the highway would be. This probably isn't what they have in mind, but I think right along the coast would be very difficult with very mountainous terrain and numerous fjords and other water crossings; however, looking at the terrain on Google Maps, following the western edge of the Interior Plateau might be more plausible. Roughly speaking, it could go from Houston to Pemberton or Lillooet, with the southern most section having the most challenging terrain.

Being from Alberta, think a BC version of the Forestry Trunk Road which largely follows the edge of the Rocky Mountains.

Highway 1 Kamloops to Alberta Series | R.W. Bruhn Bridge Progress

Video Link

Drone construction update from the R.W. Bruhn Bridge and Approaches Project in Sicamous, BC, part of the larger Highway 1 Kamloops to Alberta Four-Laning Program.
In this video, I take an aerial look at the current progress on the new R.W. Bruhn Bridge and surrounding Highway 1 approach work. The project includes replacing the aging R.W. Bruhn Bridge with a new four-lane bridge, four-laning approximately 1.9 km of Highway 1, and improving intersections between Old Sicamous Road and Silver Sands Road.
This update shows visible deck progress, bridge work over the Sicamous Narrows, road approach construction, staging areas, cranes, traffic shifts, and how the new bridge is taking shape along the Trans-Canada Highway corridor.
According to the Province of B.C., construction started in fall 2024, girders were installed in spring 2026, and the project is currently scheduled for completion in late 2027. The total project cost is estimated at $260.5 million.

Yep, was just thinking this the other day. Most of the projects they have listed for Hwy 1 are now competed, nearing completion, or well underway.

It would be very nice to know what the next batch of locations are for twinning.

Yet, never see anything new for public consultation being posted…

Gets me worried that after these projects the highway 1 twinning will become a dead program.

Trans Canada Highway 1 Ford Road to Tappen Valley Road Four-Laning project

Video Link

Drone construction update from the Highway 1 Ford Road to Tappen Valley Road Four-Laning Project near Tappen, BC, part of the larger Highway 1 Kamloops to Alberta Four-Laning Program.
In this video, I take an aerial look at the latest visible progress along the Trans-Canada Highway corridor between Ford Road and Tappen Valley Road. The project upgrades approximately 4.3 km of Highway 1, replaces the Tappen Overhead Bridge, and includes frontage road improvements, a new eastbound commercial carrier pullout, a modified protected T-intersection at Tappen Valley Road, and median barrier installation.
The Province of B.C. lists the project as in construction, with construction started on October 4, 2023 and scheduled completion on October 31, 2026. The project page also notes that Highway 1 and surrounding frontage roads from Ford Road to Tappen Valley Road are now open and operating at full design speeds.
This update shows the current state of the new four-lane highway section, road approaches, interchange-style geometry, local road connections, construction staging, and the surrounding Shuswap landscape.
