For sure, but Kum Koon Garden, Sam Po Dim Sum + Dim Sum Garden continue to be successful, so hopefully that's a light of hope in a dim corner, plus the Mexican Cafe on Princess

Mexican bakery had window broken so many times they replaced it with some painted art work on plywood. I walk to P&M to those places 1x month and never a pleasant experience. I invite co-workers to join me and none have returned a 2nd time, they love the food but not stepping around people on sidewalk or seeing zombies walking in the streets or being asked 3x for $. Truly a sad state, I hope we see change in the area and with humanity overall

The Eritrean Community In Winnipeg
Location: 507 Elgin Avenue
Developers: The Eritrean Community In Winnipeg | Inuka Community Inc.
Architect: Cibinel Architecture Ltd
Status: In development
Documents: Variance-August 27, 2025
Media:
Description: A local organization, the Eritrean Community in Winnipeg Inc., is proposing a new six-storey, 55-unit affordable housing building in the Centennial neighbourhood. All units will be rented at below 80% of the area’s median market rent, with 20% of them fully accessible for people with mobility needs. The ground floor along Isabel Street will feature resident amenities including shared laundry, a lounge, and a small hair salon, while the second floor will house a resource centre with a multi-purpose room, office, counseling space, and small business centre, plus a secure rooftop terrace for outdoor space. The building will stand 70 feet tall and include six indoor parking stalls (one for car-sharing), secure indoor bike parking for 28 bicycles, and eight more bike spaces outside. The design uses brick at ground level, modern materials above, plenty of windows for safety and connection to the street, and a welcoming main entrance with a covered seating area. Safety-focused design principles (CPTED) are built in, with large glass areas in the lobby and stairwells. Landscaping will add trees and shrubs along both Elgin Avenue and Isabel Street, including ornamental grasses, to soften the street edges. This development is a recipient of the Housing Accelerator Fund Capital Grant Incentive.

Take off the Eritrean flag and its fine. Not too different from flying a swastika on their building.

If we started banning every national flag whose current government someone dislikes, half the flags in this city would have to come down. The flag belongs to the Eritrean people and their 30-year struggle for independence, the community has the exact same right to show pride in their heritage as the Italian, Ethiopian, Israeli, Iranian, or any other community does. That’s how pluralistic societies work.

Its the flag of the country dubbed the "North Korea of Africa" who are major state sponsors of terror and enslave most of their adult population in permanent conscription on the pain og death for deserting. They're basically in a league of their own. Im in a position at work where I deal with Eritrean refugees often, if you heard the stories of what that state is like youd be hollering from the rooftops thwt this government needs to be toppled and its leaders nuremberged. Rope included.

Hopefully, Marketlands and 228 King Street will spur growth in the area. More people in the area will attract investors.

I understand where you’re coming from - the Eritrean regime’s indefinite policies are crimes against humanity, and the refugees you work with have lived the nightmare, obviously it’s why they risked their lives to flee. But the flag isn’t a salute to the current regime; it’s the national flag that represents the 30-year independence struggle and the identity most Eritreans, including almost all the refugees, still cherish. For the diaspora, flying it is about pride in being Eritrean, not endorsement of the dictatorship—just as Russians, Iranians, or Cubans fly theirs while (some) despise their governments. The Eritrean community of Winnipeg, the very people behind this building have their flag proudly displayed on their web and Facebook pages, it’s a symbol thst represents them as a people and their children born here. The flag will endure long into the future outliving this current regime. Taking it down wouldn’t hurt the dictator in Asmara one bit — it would only hurt the refugees and families who have a new place to call home. Next time you’re in a position to interact with an Eritrean refugee ask them what their flag represents to them personally, I’m sure you’ll be surprised.

^100% agreed and hope it does but similar sentences have been said for Portage Place, MTS Centre, etc

Well in the case of the MTS centre, I’d say it did indeed attract investment to the area even if it was slow to pay off in that respect.

Yeah. We walk from the East Exchange and pass through city hall and it does start to get dicey. We try to support them as often as we can because they're the most kindest and resilient people we've met. I hope they stay and anchor down the area.

The pay off around MTS Centre has been slow, but it's been making strides. Need more people other than True North investing in downtown, and hopefully after the Portage Place reno + the Pan Am Clinic, that all changes for the better. Plus the Boyd Building is finally getting renovated. Medical Arts building is a residential tower now. The offices across the RBC convention centre is residential now. I'd like to think we're trending in the right direction.

In my observations walking to and from work, there has been a noticeable increase in pedestrian traffic on the sidewalks along Portage since the buses were re-routed. This would be the non-zombie type pedestrian I am referring to.

Also, the Main Street sketch doesn't really hit until City Hall and points North. People begging or asking for money is so ubiquitous downtown, it doesn't even register for me anymore.

Drove through Chinatown earlier, noticed something is being built where the old Shanghai building used to be. Anyone know what's going up there?? What ever it is I hope it means a revival of Chinatown.

It's going to be residential? Interesting......I wonder if they will have commercial space at street level?
