Yeah, west Pickle is where my money is.

There’s probably some potential synergies with the research reactor there at Pickle proper (for nuclear medicine stuff), but I think that’s outweighed by all the available space.

It’s interesting to note that both Pickle and West Pickle were just rezoned for “life sciences mixed use”, a zoning category that didn’t even exist before. So this switch has been in works (or at least contemplated) for like a year or more.

This development makes sense - considering how landlocked the downtown is.

UT owns quite a bit of land both east and west of MoPac near 360/Braker Lane. To develop a medical campus here is very interesting.

Eltife said a design team would analyze the North Austin site to see if it “makes more sense” for the project. The Erwin Center site also remains under consideration.

A UT representative said the timeline for the project remains the same, with construction anticipated to begin in 2026 and an opening expected by 2030.

Obviously we don't know details, but are there any ideas as to how the former Erwin Center site would be utilized if the hospitals don't go there? Would it just be freed up for more medical school facilities?

If true and they plan to start construction in '26 that would mean UT has completed plans for both sites already. One would think they'd want to build next to Dell Seton, the Med School and School of Nursing but perhaps they or MD Anderson want to go bigger than the site allows.

Nice to see the practice facility going vertical. It's going to be such a simple project that it will start looking done before we know it.

You need to get your registration renewed, Gilly!

I guess this didn't get posted here yet. They announced plans for a new UT volleyball arena on the corner of 35 and MLK and student-athlete housing on Robert Dedmon.

Austin FC owners Tench, Simone Coxe give $100M for two new UT hospitals

https://www.statesman.com/news/healthcar...-university-texas-hospitals-21290296.php

...The UT hospitals are a $2.5 billion project. The hospitals, when announced in 2023, were expected to open in 2029 to 2030 on the site of the Erwin Center, where the Longhorns played basketball. That center has now been torn down and the site cleared.

There are questions about whether that Erwin Center site is big enough for both the MD Anderson hospital and UT specialty center hospital. If building a new hospital campus with the two hospitals does not fit that site, the location could shift to another area such as near the Domain in North Austin, but nothing has been announced. The university says it will not split the two hospitals to two separate locations. It will be one hospital campus.

^^ Any updates on the hospitals beyond that blurb? I know they were considering JJ Pickle or just across Mopac. Anyone know anything?

The massive tract of land directly south of the Erwin Center site, aka the former site of Breckenridge Hospital which has sat as an urban wasteland for almost a decade would be an excellent site for the medical district to expand.

It's ready made, and it just makes sense. But in this city it would probably be a controversy, and our leaders would put up too many roadblocks.

So, UT probably moves the medical district north, and the Brack site can sit empty for another five or ten years.

^ I was thinking the same thing, but I was wondering if they wanted even more room to expand over time than that solution would allow based on the things I've heard. It wouldn't be terrible to have it downtown, for sure...but near the Domain would be an acceptable compromise. Anywhere else would be unfortunate, in my opinion, but I don't know all of the details.
