The lot with the building that was torn down and adjacent parking lot seem almost impossibly small for a multi-thousand capacity amphitheater. Could the plan also use the lots across 6th street? It appears they are owned by the city.

Good question, but I guess they have it all figured out. It’s apparently under construction prep already, so it must be quite advanced in planning.

White Oak amphitheater in Greensboro sits on a wider but shorter parcel than this one and it has a capacity of 7,000 people. White Oak's site is larger but not by a lot and seats 40% more people, so a capacity of 5,000 on this site seems plausible.

As it relates to the amphitheater, I always thought the area bounded by Marshall and Buxton between 7th and 8th was the best spot for that kind of venue. It’s bigger so you could do more with it. It has the same ideal slope and the closest thing to it is industrial. Ties in better with Industry Hill there as well. I’d rather put housing on the lot they are using, but an amphitheater is a huge improvement over the parking lot and defunct building.

I've been told through a reliable source that yes the amphitheater is happening in the location between Marshall and Spruce. Flow is merely the property owner and not the developer. It is being leased and developed by another party.

I know some of this is speculation, so I'm just throwing it out there.
White Oak has a show a month right now on the website. We're building a smaller one (5k vs 7k) and hope to accomplish what with a larger venue and population center next door? I'd love to have a Tanger Center and an amphitheater in town but are we really going to be on the map with it for any act?

It's not GSO envy, I love DTWS and live there, I just question if it'll work if it is as we're hearing. I want to be excited, just have a feeling it won't be a success.

On the plus side, it will attract more people to a different part of DTWS.

Am I crazy? Please correct me, I want to be so wrong.

From what I understand Live Nation is building this. Live Nation and Ticketmaster have merged and control a big part of the music/entertainment industry (touring and venues). I would say we have a better chance of getting acts similar to what Red Hat in Raleigh get (also run by Live Nation) than G'boro. Only one band has drawn me to White Oak over the years.

The amphitheater sounds great to me, but one does wonder why everything in W-S is slightly smaller than GSO? (We're building a smaller one (5k vs 7k))

Because Greensboro is slightly larger than Winston-Salem. Also, Greensboro has far more college age residence that live and work there. Winston-Salem colleges are very small and their students move away after they graduate.

The Asheville outdoor venue "The Yards" (Formerly Rabbit Rabbit) holds 4k standing only. They host top indie, americana, rock touring bands. 5k is plenty and I always appreciate a seat!

So there was a quick blurb on WXII last night. Basically they said yes the rumors are true. They had a City of WS logo on the screen and it appears the city is behind this to draw tourism. They said the city says there isn't much info to share at this time.

Looks like that will be a cool spot. Love how they revitalized their downtown over the past decade. Just visited a few months ago and was very impressed.

White Oak does not have 7,000 permanent seats. That number may include the lawn area but there is no way there are that many seats.
The proposed amphitheater in downtown is temporary as Red Hat in Raleigh initially was to see if the idea is sustainable. Something permanent and larger could be the final product.

I didn't mean to imply that White Oak has 7,000 seats. What I said is that White Oak has 7,000 capacity, which is what they list online. Of course not all of that is permanent seats. I assumed the 5,000 number being listed for this new venue was capacity as well. Most of these amphitheaters have some permanent seating with open/lawn space behind it, so I thought that was what would be built here as well. Is it supposed to be all permanent seats?
