Brightline West kicks off July with more fieldwork for high-speed rail project

By Rene Ray De La Cruz
Victorville Daily Press
July 1, 2025

"Brightline West has announced an additional round of field investigation work projects along Interstate 15 in Southern California.

The field work, for the company’s 218-mile high-speed rail project from Las Vegas to Rancho Cucamonga, will occur at various locations within the rail corridor along the I-15 right-of-way.

Motorists should proceed cautiously through work zones and adhere to posted detour signs, speed limits and other signage...'

Brightline seeks private activity bonds for Tampa extension: Analysis

By Bob Johnston
Trains.com
July 14, 2025

A route for a rail line to Tampa from Orlando in the median of Interstate 4 has been preserved despite highway improvements, as seen during this reconstruction project at Exit 48 near Polk City, Fla., on Feb. 10, 2023. Bob Johnston

“ORLANDO, Fla. — Brightline has petitioned the Florida Development Finance Corp., seeking to have the state agency issue up to $400 million of private activity bond funding to advance design and planning for its long-sought extension to Tampa, as well as improvements to existing routes.

The request for more debt financing comes as the company plans to defer a scheduled July 15 payment to current bondholders, who have been earning 10% to 12% on their private activity bond investment.

Meanwhile, a Trains News Wire analysis shows these financial events are occurring at a time when benefits of increased capacity are starting to extricate Brightline from its previous inability to capture increased demand for both Miami-Orlando and South Florida travelers created by its superior onboard service, reliability, and 16 daily round trips. The expanded capacity has come with the addition of a Smart class coach on every train.”

Brightline disputes investigative findings involving highspeed railway death toll
Critics have gone so far as to dub it the “Fright Line” or the “Death Train.”
A new investigation is shedding more light and raising questions about the real reasons why.
A joint investigation by WLRN and the Miami Herald found that Brightline trains have killed 182 people since the rail line’s launch in 2018, making it the deadliest passenger railway in the country per mile.

My only beef with this article is that it's not Brightline's fault that these people died, but, their own actions.

Yeah, I am aware of that. People are not following the laws. They are not listening to the flashing lights and they asked you to stay off the tracks!! They are not paying attention to the trains. Please be patient with them and wait for the train to go through. Don’t cross the tracks! Don’t do it! You have to listen to the trains horns or flashing lights. Think trains! Think safety!!

Brightline West Vegas-to-LA rail closes out July with work projects in the High Desert

By Rene Ray De La Cruz
Victorville Daily Press
July 31, 2025

“Brightline West will close out July with field investigation work along Interstate 15 for its nearly $12 billion Las Vegas to Southern California high-speed rail project.

The field investigation work will include geotechnical borings and samplings, utility potholing and land surveying along portions of the 218-mile all-electric train route.

Work will primarily take place during daytime hours, with some work scheduled at night to minimize disruptions to traffic.”

This is a shorter route than the LA - San Francisco HSR, it doesn’t go through as many populated areas, and doesn’t have to cross the Tehachapi’s, and yet the estimated costs are still rising significantly. The CA HSR has certainly made many errors and mistakes but can we admit that building a 500-mile rail system through geologically challenging terrain is just difficult?

California-to-Vegas High-Speed Rail Costs Jump $5.5 Billion

By Martin Z Braun
Bloomberg
October 1, 2025

“The price tag for building a private high-speed passenger railroad from Southern California to Las Vegas has swelled by nearly 35%.

Brightline West’s 218-mile (351 kilometer) railroad will now cost $21.5 billion, according to the US Department of Transportation’s website, which lists the company as a loan applicant. The initial projection was $16 billion. The higher cost has led the Fortress Investment Group-backed company to seek a $6 billion loan from the Trump administration, according to the site.

Last month, Brightline’s Chief Executive Officer Mike Reininger said construction costs were increasing due to rising labor and material costs, in part caused by high demand due to the proliferation of data centers, power plants and transportation projects…”

This should surprise NO ONE.

Brightline, and to be fair DesertXpress before it, have always publicized an unrealistically low cost estimate, partially to politically contrast the "bloated" and "overbudget" publicly funded California HSR project to their lean and superior private enterprise funded "HSR" project.

People were so willing to believe the shockingly low number - shockingly low for a high speed railway that is - because it's apparently the American way to assume private interests can better deliver projects than the government.

This is my opinion, but Brightline should more closely partner with the governments of CA and NV and go back to the original superiorly engineered DesertXpress plan as part of a PPP to show that private capital AND public capital and management can in fact successfully produce impressive mega-projects.

CAHSR has had its fair share of delays and cost overruns, but yeah. Brightline finally figured out that when you actually try to build, instead of just talk about building, HSR in a geographically challenging environment, it costs a lot of money.

Cost nearly triples to build train between LA, Las Vegas
By Olivia Harden, Travel Reporter
Oct 2, 2025

The planned high-speed rail from California to Las Vegas has a much heftier price tag than originally expected.

The company that owns the Brightline West project, which plans to build a nearly 220-mile rail line connecting Las Vegas and Rancho Cucamonga, has recently revealed that the cost is almost three times higher than initially projected. The project was initially expected to cost $8 billion, and more recently, the number grew to $16 billion. As first reported by Bloomberg, a report from the Transportation Department released Wednesday estimated that the cost of building Brightline West is now $21.5 billion.

DesertXpress Enterprises, which operates as Brightline West, planned to keep costs down by starting the rail line in Rancho Cucamonga, approximately 40 miles east of Los Angeles, thereby prompting travelers to use the existing Metrolink line from Union Station in Downtown LA. The company is also building the high-speed rail in the median of Interstate 15 to reduce costs associated with land acquisition. However, these cost-cutting measures were not enough to keep the project on budget.

Brightline West told Bloomberg that the company attributes rising price to increasing labor and material costs. In response, the company revised its financial plan by applying for a $6 billion loan from the Trump administration, which was initially intended to be secured through a bank facility.

Couple that with a big drop in Vegas tourism, hmm... will this project be abandoned? With it being a private venture, is the likelihood of the whole thing being canceled more likely? You know how corporations are; it's all about the money, it's all 'bout the dum dum da da dum dum...

No, it's not. They are not going to abandoned it. They are going to continue to build Brightline West construction. Still ongoing construction. They will be completed by 2028 or 2029.

Work on Brightline’s Las Vegas rail station is ‘underway’

By Mick Akers
Las Vegas Review-Journal
January 19, 2026

"After about two decades of talk about a high-speed rail line between Las Vegas and Southern California, Brightline West’s newly minted executive director said the time is now for heavy work on the system to finally get underway.

Brightline West Executive Director Michael Reininger, who moved from CEO of Brightline to his new role last week, said work is already underway on the company’s planned Las Vegas station on Las Vegas Boulevard between Warm Springs and Blue Diamond roads..."

By Rene Ray De La Cruz
Victorville Daily Press
Feb. 23, 2026

Brightline West is conducting field work in Southern California for its high-speed rail project connecting Las Vegas to Rancho Cucamonga. The 218-mile, all-electric rail system is expected to reach speeds of up to 200 miles per hour.

Construction and field testing are underway in both Las Vegas and along the Interstate 15 corridor in California.

The projected start date for passenger service has been updated to late 2029.
Brightline West will perform field investigation work on the Southern California side of the Las Vegas, Nevada to Rancho Cucamonga high-speed rail project.

It isn't looking so good for Brightline.

Fortress’s Brightline Private Railroad Teeters Under Heavy Debt Burden
The nation’s largest private railroad is negotiating with creditors to avert what could become one of the largest defaults in U.S. municipal bond market history

By Alicia McElhaney
Wall Street Journal
May 21, 2026

“Investors who poured billions into Florida's Brightline railroad are confronting a potentially steep financial hit as the nation's largest private intercity rail operator teeters on the verge of one of the largest municipal-market defaults in U.S. history.

Brightline, controlled by Fortress Investment Group, amassed $5.5 billion in debt to get its rail lines up and running, mostly through tax-exempt municipal bonds. The company has since struggled with tepid ridership growth and personal-injury lawsuits tied to accidental deaths on its tracks. Cash is also running low, leaving Brightline on the precipice of a creditor takeover.

Now the company and Fortress are in restructuring talks and seeking new capital, warning that without a financial lifeline it might not continue as a going concern.”

Would be funny if Brightline ends up being forced to hand itself over to Amtrak.
