With the colder than average temperatures across a large swathe of the continent, comes news that the Rideau Canal skating rink in Ottawa will be opening a 4-km segment tomorrow. That's about half of its length.

I was just telling my wife this yesterday. We were out running errands and it was -8 with a -15 wind chill. I swear it seemed like it was -20 or -25. It was windy but not that windy.

I just put it down to getting old.

I feel like if people attempted to get out and enjoy the cold they would like it a lot more. Today, for instance, was beautiful. No complaints.

That's exactly what I am going to do.

Trying to plan a couple of hours on the Rideau Canal this weekend.

Still bare ground here. Stat from a local meteorologist (Brian Walsh):

Quote:
If you thought this has been a very snow-less winter in St. John's, so far, you are bang on.

I had a look at snowfall records from St. John's #YYT, which began in 1942.

Since then, there has NEVER been a fall/winter with less snowfall accumulation through January 10 than this one.

-6C with a wind chill of -12 and sunny. Finally a sunny day. On top of that, it is much more of a typical winter day although it is still a tad below normal.

Low of -12C (wind chill of -21) this morning.

The warmspot was North Cowichan, BC at 10.8C.

Warmest low was Estevan Point, BC at 7.7C.

It's overcast though there was 10 minutes of sun.

This vine is giving up and trying to flee my kitchen to head south.

Edit: sun and fog and rain and snow and...

Edit 2: no accumulation. I'm ready for a proper friggin' blizzard now. I want 6 feet of snow and a few days off work.

It was windy and cold last night. Despite being 6c, it felt brisk out there.

We'll be getting some sub-zero lows next week.

-1C and cloudy in Moncton at 1 PM.

No major storms in the forecast period, which will take us well into mid January without a nor'easter in Moncton. There is only a skiff of snow on the ground.

In my youth and young adulthood, the stormiest part of year was from late December to mid January. Over the last decade, that paradigm has disappeared.

Love those Vancouver photos, giallo.

It's currently -7 and lightly snowing in Montreal. Yesterday was a similar temperature but clear and sunny, which meant there was a beautiful twilight hour after the sun set.

-4C and cloudy in Moncton at 11 AM, going up t0 -1C this afternoon.

Still no storms on the horizon (not that I am complaining, but, my joungest son is upset at the lack of snow cover on the ground).

High yesterday was 0.5. The low last night was -1.5. Currently it's -0.2 and the forecast high for today is 1.0 under mostly cloudy skies. It's bright out and no snow. All in all it's pretty much normal/nice though overnight lows are warmer than normal which seems to be the trend no matter the time of year.

It's 0.2 degrees, first time above freezing in 10 days, which is the longest streak since February 2021, when we had 16 consecutive days below freezing.

On Friday evening, we got 8cm of beautiful fluffy snow, and it was actually nice to go out and shovel snow for the first time in a long time. We're getting to be like Americans, there were tons of cars and transport trucks in the ditch, many people forget how to drive in the snow.
