The NDP had their best election result ever when they were still members of Socialist International. The ruling UK Labour Party remains part of Socialist International today.

The decision to go with Thomas Mulcair as their leader and the decision to leave Socialist International were both bad decisions.

The socialist caucus has about as much influence within the federal NDP as the anti-choice zealots and white supremacist groups have within the federal conservative party.

Opponents of either party will swear that the scope of their influence is absolutely massive.

Take into consideration that Saskatchewan essentially has a two party system… The NDP on the centre left and Sask Party on the right. Same goes for BC.

NB essentially has a three party system with the Greens on the centre left, Liberal in the centre, and PCs on the right. The last thing NB needs is a stronger NDP on the far left getting more votes, but no seats… it will only serve to split the left of centre vote and increase the likelihood of electing PC governments, while making it harder for the Liberals and Greens to win seats.

If we had ranked ballots and instant runoff voting, it would be another story entirely.

The NB Liberals might actually support such a straightforward electoral reform, but I doubt it will be something they pursue under their upcoming mandate.

In this last election The Liberals lost SJ East by 34 votes, while the NDP got something like 250 votes and the Greens 900 I think? If we had a ranked ballot and instant runoff voting— the Liberals would have won that seat. Instead a PC won it, despite a majority of voters in that riding being opposed to the PCs.

The only way to get a stronger, more relevant NDP in NB (at least without empowering the PCs) is through pursuing electoral reform.

Well, NB ndp has a history with the waffle. Like a bad zombie weed, it keeps popping up.

Quote:
In 1971, a party convention narrowly endorsed a manifesto proposed by the New Brunswick Waffle, a local group loosely related to the minority wing of the federal NDP known as The Waffle, which was known for advocating stronger socialist and nationalist policies. The federal NDP responded to the New Brunswick upset by temporarily dissolving the provincial NDP until non-Waffle leadership was re-established with the reinstatement of J. Albert Richardson. The Waffle episode had the effect of promoting greater labour involvement in the party, for fear that the party would fall under the sway of more radical supporters without it.
Apparently it was high drama back in the day. Broadbent 'cancelled' the provincial party!

Any visibility on the green zones yet for homeless encampments for SJ?

Area 911 is living up to its name. Two fires and a shooting.

Interesting solution from London, ON. 100m setback from any residential property. Applied locally could improve area911?

Sounds like a no brainer. Therefore, we probably won't do it.

I think the city should put some of these temporary zones as close to the Rothesay and Grand Bay borders as possible, to make a point... no closer than 100 meters from any other residences, of course!

Hopefully Susan Holt delivers on her promise to get 30,000 homes built, along with substantial investments in public housing.

I'm optimistic Team Holt will deliver, and I'm positive she will take the situation a lot more seriously than Higgs did. Higgs, unfortunately, set the bar ridiculously low.

I was struck by how nasty some of the comments and personal attacks were in response to Higgs' post. Seems some on the left can be just as distasteful and lacking in class as the F*ck Trudeau crowd on the right.

A pox on both their houses!

100%.

Some people take great glee in jumping up and down on the grave of the recently departed.

Agreed.

Its unfortunate that there is no recognition of the years of service and leadership under an unprecedented global calamity.

Finances aside, the provinces' mitigations for covid is his real legacy; that we rode this donneybrook better than most jurisdictions.

Agreed, it’s better to at least try and be clever than be outright rude and obnoxious. I only used the hangman emoji on here because the colours matched up with the Red, Blue, and Green of the parties, and because i anticipated him and his party would be decimated… which they were.

I’d imagine Facebook would have the most negative comments, especially in the “Newschaser” groups.

Also imagine he’d get next to no engagement on instagram, which is emblematic of why he lost. Running radio ads and sending physical junk mail, while Susan Holt was hosting LIVES on insta and Facebook with significant engagement. She connected with 18-40ish year old voters that Higgs didn’t come close to. Higgs probably barely knows what an Instagram is.

He’s probably the least favourite premier I’ve lived under, and that includes Scott Moe. I’m sure Higgs would be a great guy to sit down and have a beer with, or share a doobie with and talk about politics, but he was a pretty terrible premier who lacked the vision we need in a premier. He had pretty short sighted goals, and i wouldn’t really describe his fiscal austerity as economic stewardship. Nonetheless, the province has changed for the better in a lot of ways since 2020, in-spite of Higgs’s myopic policy agenda. Yet, for many of the most vulnerable in our society, the province has become a far worse place to live since 2020.

He doesn’t deserve full praise for all the good things that happened, nor should he be fully blamed for all the bad things that happened under his watch. His legacy is a slightly mixed bag I guess, but it’s still a bag mostly full of turds.

Imo twitter aka X is the second mostly toxic platform next to reddit. It's only gotten worse under musk.

Didn’t realize that another NB mp according to the tj is suggesting a secret vote on Trudeau.

Also, interesting advertising numbers.

Quote:
In 2023, the Liberals spent just $381,346 on advertising, a figure easily dwarfed by the $8,542,867 the Conservatives spent that year, much of it on TV ads.

The figures for 2024 are likely to show much the same, as the Liberals have essentially ceded the TV ad space to their main opponent.

If only it was Dominic LeBlanc… then he might actually listen and resign.

You have to wonder if Dominic isn't having thoughts about playing the Brutus role in this tragedy?

Although, you also have to wonder if all of Trudeau's inner circle aren't too contaminated to have any realistic hope of being his successor.

Sort of an extension of the "F*ck Trudeau" sentiment in the country to "F*ck Trudeau and anybody that looks like him or ever supported him"

Would Dominic even have the energy and reach to pull this off?

With two cancer diagnosis his runway is pretty short; and has he built enough goodwill outside NB in the rank and file liberal members outside of NB?

You are probably right.

I do think that any of Trudeau's senior cabinet members would come to the race with a lot of baggage. Perhaps not so much with loyal Liberals but in terms of electability leading the party into an election.

Dominic and Justin have been friends since childhood, when their fathers Pierre and Romeo were both in Ottawa together, Dominic will not stab Justin in the back. He might give him a gentle reminder that it might be time to go, but, nothing more than that.

Anand, Gould, and Miller (probably) have enough smarts to be able to distance themselves. Joly, I'm uncertain.

Freeland... one may as well suggest Ignatieff or Dion.
