Vancouver is similar. I never remember getting negative double digits here. Yet here we are, three years in a row.
There was a sharp short cold snap in NS last winter that did a real number on the Annapolis Valley vineyards.

Currently -7C and partly cloudy in Moncton at 11 AM. Snow is expected to start at around 1 PM, transitioning though ice pellets and freezing rain to rain by about 8 PM. Around 5 cm of snow and ice pellets expected, followed by about 10 mm of rain. Our overnight "low" will be +8C. Gusty winds up to 70 km/hr expected.

I disagree.

We get these anomalies almost every year, see the table below, and dont forget Okanagan Lake has frozen completely over many times in the past.

I am working closely with a local vineyard this year on a big project and discussed the issues on the death of upwards of 60% of the grapevines in the Okanagan, it wasnt just due to the cold (remember we have some fantastic ice wins here) but how early the cold snap was while the vines had yet to go dormant.

The one thing I would be concerned about is the snow, as it creates a natural insulator for the roots of the vines to help protect from the cold temps through the winter.

We had a decent amount of snow fall last evening but it transitioned to rain over night and has mostly all melted now. Windy as a hell today.

Thanks for the stats.

I do remember Kelowna being below zero for weeks and weeks at a time making the lake freeze over, but these increasingly common harsh cold snaps seem new to me. Judging by the stats, they are more common than I remember.

It was -9c in downtown Vancouver yesterday. Despite the cold, a lot of people were out in the streets doing their thing.

Fascinating how it is so much more extreme than Edmonton (-33) and Calgary (-31) which it sits between. Is that all due to urban heat islands?

This cold snap still makes me laugh. In the face of every long term prediction / projection for this year.

Forecast mild benign January… experience a cold snap for the ages!
Urban heat island has an impact but the averages suggest there is more going on in the difference between Edmonton City (Blatchford) and the airport, which is more prone to Red Deer like temps. All the other rural stations in the region also have warmer averages than the airport without the urban effect. Overnight lows in Stony Plain (a comparable distance from the city but to the west instead of south) are typically closer to Blatchford and around 6 degrees warmer than the Airport. Nights in particular just seem to get colder in central AB.

Being a bit of a natural “warm” spot combined with urban heat island means that Edmonton is the warmest station in the area, but the international airport is also often the coldest going back decades.

At the moment though, Edmonton is around 5 degrees warmer than most of the stations in the region. Looks like we bottomed out closer to -36 and the forecast for tonight is now -35… might still slip through this without a proper -40C recorded for the City. Still cold AF but in a range that has happened a few times in the last 50 years.

The coldest temperature so far this winter in Windsor was -7.2C. The current forecast has us going down to -15C, but I suspect that we will end up a bit colder with this very cold system that is moving across the continent.

All good! in all fairness your remark about note remembering the frigid temps as a kid made me kind of think back at the same thing and not really recalling the brutal cold either.

I remember one day in 2008/9 that was like -25c, coldest temp i'd ever felt, but that was a freak cold snap. This current one is far colder

In the Van. pics above there is exactly one colourful coat present. 90% of all the coats were black or charcoal. How does St. John's compare in terms of outerwear? Because their colourful houses certainly make a walk on a winter day way less depressing. If people wore some colour then that might also do the trick. And maybe we can promote the idea of manufacturing colourful cars only? There would be a smaller portion of people that suffer from SAD.

I remember the women in Montreal dressing so stylishly even in extremely cold weather. Colorful jackets, scarves etc. I'm the guy that refuses to wear black: only brown, blue, green and pink!

Another grey overcast day in Toronto with a light dusting of snow. Too tired to go anywhere today.

Anyone in Edmonton want to do that toilet paper roll trick? Douse it in water, toss it outdoors and as it unravels it apparently freezes in place. And how's your Tesla Model 3 range? Some guy on X says he's getting half the range and it's taking hours to charge.

Kind of weird day.

2C this morning, then down to -1C (wind chill of -8) in the afternoon before climbing back to 1C.

About 10 cm more on the ground. At some point, there was some hail mixing in.

The warmspot was Shelburne Sandy Point and Greenwood, NS at 9.7C.

Warmest low was Baccoro, NS at -0.3C. All weather stations in Canada dipped below freezing in the last 24 hours.

We got 7.4 mm of rain, no snow Friday night, but we got a bit of freezing rain and snow today that didn't amount to anything. I was hoping the ground would be covered with snow before the cold arrived. High temperature was 4.7 at 1 am, then around -2 this afternoon. Now it's down to -6 and falling.

It was a tough year for them, and I'm sure the extreme rain events of the summer weren't helpful either.

However, they seemed to come through it alright, with smaller harvests, though. I recall a June frost a few years back was quite difficult, resulting in some wineries having to buy some grapes from Ontario vinyards in order to have enough volume to make production worthwhile.

-8 here this morning. Cold front finally hit after it still being above freezing yesterday. The cold finally brought out the sun though, so that’s nice!

Supposed to go down to -17 tonight, which is the coldest low predicted for this week. Definitely cold, but far from unusual here. We typically experience a handful of -20 lows every year.

Forecast has above freezing temps returning next week. This will likely be the coldest week of the year.

Ontario had record setting colds last winter. I was up in Halliburton in February when it hit -40c overnight, a record personal cold for me by about 10 degrees. That kind of cold is very different than -20, which while still formidable, is much more manageable.

Well, I was wondering if the cold snap around Vancouver was enough to freeze some ponds or lakes for skating.
I found these pics on the Vancouver Sun website this morning. I presume that's the pond in Vanier Park in Kitsilano.

This is one of those situations that will result in Windsor being the coldest spot in Southern Ontario because the cold air is being pulled up from the southwest (Missouri and Central Illinois) and therefore isn't moderated by any Great Lake before it reaches us.

^ Yep, it dropped to -15.8C this morning and now going down to -18C tonight. Damn those cold southwest winds!
