The tree belt around the field where the long term care facility has a lot of pine trees which is unusual for Regina. In some spots it is 5 rows of trees thick with a row of spruce, larch and poplar as well. I wonder if it was part of the abandoned Regina Research Farm out by the golf course that is now owned by the Gordon First Nation.

That is the boundary of Wascana Centre. Those trees would have been planted by them. If I recall it was about 25 years ago.

...and yet the building was constructed and occupied in less than a year.
Seems pretty good to me.

Huh? What building? We're talking about the 11th Ave revitalization project.

The Yards, a piece of land located between Casino Regina and Dewdney Avenue, has sat empty since CP Rail decided to move its rail yard out Regina's downtown in 2012.

Massive piece of land sitting empty for two decades , what is wrong with city hall , none of these catalyst projects will start either city Council does not know if they’re coming or going

CP got 300 acres of free service land, up to $20 million to cover building at the GTH, AND sold the yards to the city.

I can't even begin to tell you how happy this makes me.

This building has been needed for at least 20 years. Although I have to say, being the sentimental fella I am, the old Humane Society building will always have a special place in my heart. All of my "babies" were adopted there (ever since I was a kid) and I have spent countless hours volunteering there as well.

If I am ever back in Regina, I will definitely be going to check the new building out!

I do not believe CP got $20 million from the Government. Do you have a source? I believe CP paid for the land at the GTH. Being an early mover and anchor/service company, no doubt they would have got a good deal.

Uh, the link I posted. FOI request for contract says CP got 300 acres of serviced land for free, government would pay up to $20 million to build their roads and container yard, would relocated power lines as necessary at the governments expense, would commit to upgrading Dewdney, would commit to building the west bypass.

CP never got $20 million. That is the maximum the Government was required to spend to acquire the land, do the servicing and build roads. The agreement does not provide for any payment of money to CP. Some of the $20 million was the cost of the land, so you are double counting.

I am not saying this was a good deal, but there would be no GTH without CP.

I am not saying the GTH was well executed, but this explains the sweetheart deal for CP. You cannot have a logistics hub without them. They are like an anchor department store in a 1980s mall. Believe me, there is no love lost between the Provincial Government and CP. It has always been so.

Despite the College Ave MUP tender getting cancelled, it got built anyway. Perhaps the city used their own crews rather than delaying it a year. Just about done, looks like the curb ramps were poured today, then they need to backfill a little asphalt after the concrete cures.

Other discoveries today. A new set of traffic lights on Chuka north of the Save on Foods and this commercial development is starting across the street from Save On Foods. https://www.thewinchestergroup.ca/cameo-on-chuka

They were staking out the new road alignment south of the new Pinkie Road bridge, so maybe that work will get started this year after all. All the old power poles along the stretch to the tracks have been removed.

And some pictures from Sunday / today. https://imgur.com/a/Ys3LQa3

For all you fans of Ring Road restrictions, a tender just went up to design and build replacements for both of the north Albert bridges! Construction targeted for 2025 and 2026.

Crazy. When was the last summer the Ring Road was not restricted, if ever?

Water main replacement is supposed to cause restrictions from 2024-26. Plus there is the widening project.

They need to try harder to leave lanes open when they are not even working on them. Use concrete traffic barriers to protect workers.
