Zürich: Quick City Overview

City: Zürich
Canton: Zürich
Set: Quick City Overview

Zürich currently functions as the great international center of Switzerland, functioning almost as a second capital of the country. The city began to take this role since the 19th Century, with exponential population growth that led it to extend itself from its old medieval settlement onto Lake Zürich (Zürichsee). At the same time, it was the heart of the industrialization of Switzerland and the place where the first railroads of the country appeared, along with the Stock Exchange and a big number of wealthy families that made the city prosper. Generally speaking, by the logic of Northern Switzerland, both its language, culture and architecture have a clear german influence, especially from the South of Germany, although their identity is different. Even today, the skyline of Zürich is still dominated by the domes of churches and, like the case of London, one of its most interesting areas is the banking sector, with large private palaces designed in a regional Fine Arts style.

Zürich Hauptbahnhof (Central Station)

City: Zürich
Canton: Zürich
Set: Central Station

The Zürich Hauptbahnhof is the largest railway station in Switzerland. Zürich is a major railway hub, with services to and from across Switzerland and neighbouring countries such as Germany, Italy, Austria, and France. The station was originally constructed as the terminus of the Spanisch Brötli Bahn, the first railway built completely within Switzerland. Serving up to 2,915 trains per day, Zürich HB is one of the busiest railway stations in the world. The station can be found at the northern end of the Altstadt, or old town, in central Zürich, near the confluence of the rivers Limmat and Sihl. The station is on several levels, with platforms both at ground and below ground level, and tied together by underground passages and the ShopVille shopping mall. The Sihl passes through the station in a tunnel with railway tracks both above and below. The station's railway yards extend about 4 km (2.5 mi) to the west.

Luxembourg: City Overview

City: Luxemburgo
Canton: Lëtzebuerg
Set: City Overview

Luxembourg City stands at the confluence of the Alzette and Pétrusse rivers in southern Luxembourg, at the heart of Western Europe, situated 213 km (132 mi) by road from Brussels, 372 km (231 mi) from Paris, and 209 km (130 mi) from Cologne. The city contains Luxembourg Castle, established by the Franks in the Early Middle Ages, around which a settlement developed. As of January 2019, Luxembourg City had a population of 119,214, which is more than three times the population of the country's second most populous commune (Esch-sur-Alzette). In 2011, Luxembourg was ranked as having the second highest per capita GDP in the world at $80,119, with the city having developed into a banking and administrative centre. It's also one of the de facto capitals of the European Union (alongside Brussels and Strasbourg), as it is the seat of several institutions, agencies and bodies of the European Union, including the European Court of Justice, the European Court of Auditors, the Secretariat of the European Parliament, the European Investment Bank, the European Investment Fund, and the European Stability Mechanism.
