Winnipeg Statistics

2006 census statistics are now available on the City website at this link by neighbourhood. There is also some comparative consolidated data by "topic" at this link.

Thought it would be a good idea to have a thread for statistics (or amateur attempts at statistical analysis) concerning Winnipeg (or other Manitoba centres, or the province as a whole).

Anyway, as posted on the "Of Interest" thread, here are the neighbourhoods with densities of >5,000 per km2:

(1) Total Population
(2) Population Change in Percent (2001-2006)
(3) Population Density (Persons per km2)
(4) Average Number of Persons per Household
(5) Average Number of Persons per Census Family
(6) Average Number of Children at Home per Census Family

Thunder Bay, Manitoba () has three over 5,000. All are multi-unit social housing projects located in the suburbs. That's going by dissemination area. When you make them actual neighbourhood size, most are a bit bigger, I don't know if we have any that are over 5,000.

Lots of white downtown according to the map.

Here are all the neighbourhoods with a greater than average (for the city) number of visible minorities (which does not count native Canadians). I could only fit in four groups but more are actually listed in the original data. The message here is that if you want diversity, the suburbs are as good a place as any, at least the ones in the north of the city and in Fort Garry (including Linden Woods, Fort Richmond, Whyte Ridge, etc.). Among the neighbourhoods reporting no visible minorities were Armstrong Point and South Transcona.

It's certainly interesting that the Exchange District has emerged as one of the city's wealthiest areas, on this
map.

The numbers seem to back up what has been going on in my neighborhood (North Point Douglas). Unfortunately the 2006 data on education and income is not available.

Highlights are that the number of commuters are up overall, and number of car drivers and transit riders in particular; unemployment for people 25 and older is down 8%; Aboriginal identity is down 4.5%; home-ownership is up, with majority payments down nearly $100, and less renting households and owner-occupied households paying 30% or more on shelter, while rents and housing values increased by $26,00--which suggests to me that incomes rose.

The neighborhood has improved so much since the census crews went around in late 2005, too...

Mode of Transport:
2001

780 (total commuters) 360 46.2% (car as driver) 190 24.4% (bus) 45 5.8% (car as passenger) 100 12.8% (walk) 40 5.1% (bicycle) 25 3.2% (taxi) 0 0.0%

2006
815 (total) 410 50.3% (car as driver) 245 30.1% (bus) 40 4.9% (car as passenger) 80 9.8% (walk) 30 3.7% (bicycle) 0 0.0% (taxi)

Unemployment:
2001

55.9% (participation 15+) 45.8% (empl. 15+) 18.0% (unemp. 15+) 55.7% (part. 15-24) 45.9% (emp. 15-24) 17.6% (unemp. 15-24) 55.9% (part. 25+) 45.5% (emp. 25+) 18.8% (unemp. 25+)

If 36,815 is the 2006 number, I'm sure it's over 40,000 now. The pipeline to the Philippines represents such an important and overwhelmingly large fraction of immigration to this province, that when you think of it in terms of persons per day it's quite staggering. Very, very impressive. That number will only balloon and at a fairly significant clip in the near future.

The brother in law of one of our secretaries is emigrating to Winnipeg with his family in a couple of weeks. It's nice to hear about how excited the kids are about Winnipeg and to be reminded that even a working-class immigrant's life there is a dream come true for many people in the world.

When my father emigrated here from the Philippines in '72, he once told me that there were probably less than 200 Filipinos in the city. Most of them knew each other. It's amazing what three and a half decades of immigration can accomplish. I'd be curious to know how many were born here. I, myself, came here two months shy of my 5th birthday back in '74. Winnipeg's home - wild horses couldn't drag me away!

...in North Winnipeg, Man. born and raised, at the playground is where I spent most of my days...

Nah seriously, born and raised right here in Winnipeg! My dad came here in '78, and my mom came here in '81. They both met here later on, and found out they came from the same region in the Philippines (Bicol). Go figure!
