There isn't much brick like in eastern cities because of the earthquake risk to "unreinforced masonry construction" but there are a few glorious examples of brick construction from the turn of the century before we worried about such things. One of the major projects in the city right now is the Ritz Carlton Residences project on Market St. which involves a vertical addition and restoration of the exuberantly brick DeYoung Building (DeYoung was the family name of the family which has long owned the San Francisco Chronicle and endowed the city's major art museum, The DeYoung Museum):
