Edmonton Sports Talk

Just in case C2E is gone forever, it would be nice to carry on some the sports talk from there - Oilers, Esks, Formula 1, overseas footie, golf, curling, etc.

The Oilers off-season has officially begun. So, armchair GMs - what do you think they'll do at next week's draft? Pick Tkachuk? Trade down? Trade outright for a top-pairing D-man?

Oilers are in a bad spot. Every GM in the league knows they need help desperately and will bend Chiarelli over in any trades. most obvious need is D but there isn't exactly a long list of guys he could trade for and an even shorter list of guys who would come to YEG. But a trade is my best guess. Would not be surprised if at least two, and maybe more of Yak, RNH, eberle, and Hall were gone by the end of the summer. Problem is Yak won't bring much back in return. Eberle has great hands but a reputation for being soft, nor sure what he would bring back. RNH probably makes the most sense for a trade. Hall brings the most back in return and solves a few other issues too but I don't know if the climate is there to get rid of him. I'll say Eberle and RNH are gone.

Just curious, what "other issues" are you referring to?

Mostly his inability and/or unwillingless to play any form of defence. The guy can put up points but is an absolute liability in his own end.

And for the record I am a Oilers fan. A frustrated one, but a fan nonetheless.

^ I'm sure many would choose to come to YEG over YYC or Winnipeg or certain USA teams...

I'd love to know which players fit that description.

and which players would skip Edmonton in favour of other cities... I'd like to see that list too... if a player didn't want to play in Edmonton, they won't want to play in the The Peg, or the Saddledump either.

Winnipeg yes, and certainly Quebec if they had a franchise. But unfortunately for Oilers fans Edmonton is reportedly almost always on the list of cities most cited on no trade clauses in contracts.

^ I think that is changing with new management, new arena and the McDavid effect.

The whole attitude in general has changed in Edmonton now. It ain't the early 2000s anymore, we've come a long way.

No, that's an accurate fact from the player survey released every year.

It's probably fair to say that the prairie teams get lumped in together. I mean, if you're a 23 year old NHLer from Massachusetts and you REALLY don't want to play in Edmonton or Winnipeg, chances are you aren't going to be that keen on Calgary either.

Some players like rewards that come from playing in a city like this where everybody knows who you are, others want to be out of the spotlight. Not a big deal. I get why some prefer one over the other...it's nothing personal.

Let's keep in mind that players will go to cities with winning teams, has little to do with the actual cities in most cases. Players continue to flock to Detroit and Pittsburgh, which are not the most desirable cities otherwise.

Formula 1's inaugural race in Baku this weekend, the course looks nuts.
