Swift Current, SK, Major Construction Projects

This City of 18,600 and the 24th best place to live in Canada 2012, is the major population centre for southwest Saskatchewan, and lies midway between Regina and Medicine Hat on the Trans-Canada highway. With one of the highest non-local traffic counts along the Trans-Canada #1 Highway, the City has prioritized tourism in terms of local development. As the largest center in the southwest region of Saskatchewan, Swift Current is proud to boast a vibrant downtown business core as well as two large shopping malls; The Swift Current Mall and the Wheatland Mall

Saskatchewan's boom is benefiting all communities in Saskatchewan, including Swift Current. Swift Current is growing at a moderate pace but nothing comparable to Saskatchewan's two major centres; however, some major local developments are set to begin in the near future.

New Catholic and Public Schools Unveiled

Designs unveiled for joint-use schools
The Southwest Booster

The designs for École Centennial School and All Saints Catholic School, to be built in the Saskatchewan Valley subdivision north of the Cypress Regional Hospital, were unveiled Apr. 23 before a crowd of about 60 people, including community members, partners, parents and media.

“We are excited to present the preliminary design for our unique joint school facility,” said Debbie Olesen, Vice Chair of the Holy Trinity Catholic School Division.

“Working in collaboration with Chinook and our community partners provides many opportunities and efficiencies and a creative sharing of programs and space.”

The schools will share a vision for students and the community while retaining their individual identities and programs.

“This is collaboration at its best,” Olesen added. “You will see the tremendous commitment of two school boards and their staff, two architectural firms and a number of consultants working together in a unique partnership that involves not just the education partners, but is part of a greater community vision.

“Tonight you will witness something unique in this province, but not unique to the way of doing things in the Swift Current region.”

Randy Beler, Chair of Chinook School Division, said, “Engaging in a joint school facility with Holy Trinity is really a unique and beneficial experience. We have a common purpose: we’re all educating children and we want to provide the best 21st century environment for them.

“We appreciate the one-of-a-kind opportunity to team up with community partners to provide services in a meaningful, cost-effective way that benefits all community members.”

Both Olesen and Beler thanked the Ministry of Education for approving the project that will serve southwest Saskatchewan well into the future.

Louis Aussant of aodbt architecture said, “Just to give you a little bit of a synopsis, we’ve been working at this since last year.

“As we’re moving forward in this consultation and design process … It’s very unique, very collaborative and very exciting. Hopefully if everything goes smoothly, there’ll be somebody digging in August or September.”

Both schools have study areas on two levels, with a full sized gymnasium in each school. Economies include a shared physical plant as well as a shared library, music room, woodworking shop and art studio.

Bron Nurkowski and LeeAnn Croft, Project Architects for Stantec Architecture, said, “Working on an integrated project such as this, with two clients and two consultant teams, is a unique experience but the collaboration has been phenonmenal and the end result will be the first of its kind: two schools, one site, shared vision, shared success.

Motel 6:

I was in town the other weekend and I was wondering what or who that building was for. I thought motel 6 was suppose to be built on the property between Houston's Pizza and that Japanese Restaurant? The building is kind of bland.... ugly I'd say.

I believe this is the new Golden Health Care Incorporated personal care center:
Do you know when construction is to begin on this care home? It almost looks like they are just putting in the ground services at this point?

BTW, thanks for the pictures!

A sign has been up for years showing a Quality Inn & Suites + Ricky's being built at the site by Houston's Pizza, no action there in years though

It looks like they have all the piles in the ground...I drove by again this weekend and only some dirt work has been done. There is also a street or bike path being installed just north of this site, but I dont know why.

Lyric Theatre awarded $500,000 grant for major renovations

The Southwest Booster
May 24, 2012

Swift Current's Lyric Theatre has been awarded a $500,000 grant through the federal government's Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage Legacy Fund.

The matching grant was announced today by Cypress Hills Grasslands MP David Anderson at a celebration event at the Lyric Theatre. With the Southwest Cultural Development Group (SCDG) having previously raised commitments for a matching $500,000 through donations, sponsorships and fundraising, the $1 million project will focus on strengthening the integrity of the building, completing major roof repairs, and beginning other building upgrades and improvements.

If it lives up to the rendering, it is going to a significant upgrade to what it is now (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyric_T...Swift_Current)).

This is fantastic news, I grew up just outside Swift Current and attended a variety of concerts, plays, poetry readings and other assorted events at this theatre. It will finally get the much needed love it deserves, and the people working on the project will definitely work to make sure it's done correctly. I know most of the theatre employees personally and they are an earnestly creative bunch. Can't wait to see how this one turns out.

I like Swift Current, its a nice little city

I had only ever saw it from the #1 while passing through, but last summer had some time to kill. Figured I might as well stop at Swift Current and check it out.

Grabbed a coffee and spent some time walking around downtown (Central, 1st Ave area) and then drove around south of the tracks. Clean city, some nice parks and all the stores you would expect in a city that size.

It takes their Burger King 20 minutes to make a freaking Whopper. Appaling.

Swift Current to get new long-term care facility

Published on May 18, 2012
Elisabeth Dowson
The Southwest Booster

As the head of the Saskatchewan government, but particularly as the MLA for Swift Current, Premier Brad Wall was pleased to announce May 18 during a press conference held at the Prairie Pioneers Lodge that his government is moving forward on the next phase in the process of replacing Swift Current’s aging long-term care homes, all of which were built between 45 and 55 years ago.

“The Health Region is going to issue a request for an expression of interest from those who can provide long-term care facilities, who have done that in the past in the province, and they will respond. We know there is already interest. We understand that there will be a response. We’re going to take the time to evaluate those proposals and make a decision in the fall," Wall said during Friday's announcement.

In 2009, the provincial government provided $450,000 to the Cypress Health Region to create a capital plan for the replacement of the three existing facilities, which currently represent a total of 198 beds. With this announcement, the project is one step closer to reality.

“After [proposals are received], the Region and the Ministry, together, with the successful proponent, are going to get to work on the specific design. We’re going to make sure we’re listening to front-line staff in the design, we’re going to make sure we’re listening to residents and families of residents in the design, and … we’re going to apply LEAN design techniques to the facility itself.”

Wall said the new facility would offer about 220 beds in addition to the efficiencies and convenience of being co-located at the site of the Cypress Regional Hospital.

In terms of funding, the usual 80/20 split by government and municipalities will apply.

“There will still be that requirement in this model, even though the government itself is not building the facility, but we’re going to work carefully with the City so that’s managed and it’s certainly affordable and appropriate for the community and for the citizens of Swift Current.”

Once expressions of interest are received, the Cypress Health Region and the Ministry of Health will proceed with an open request for proposals.

“This is a great day, Wall said. “We’re happy to see this take the next step,” adding, “This is part of a process, not an event.”

Wall said initial estimates for the cost of this project are upwards of $60 million, meaning that approximately $12 million will have to come from the City.

“The local parts in other projects have sometimes come from levies, sometimes come from reserves that they have, or a long-term payment plan,” Wall suggested.

As for plans for the existing long-term care facilities, Wall said, “I think we’ll want to work with all our partners in that regard.”

Wall anticipated that the project would see sod being turned by the middle of 2013.

Bylaw Change Could Increase Development at Malls

Written by Shawn Mullin
Wednesday, 12 September 2012

The City of Swift Current is opening up their bylaws to allow for stand-alone facilities on the same land as traditional malls.

"We see the trends around the province and other provinces in cities where these mall sites are going to "big box" stores, and in a lot of cases, there's several different buildings on one site as opposed to one building," said City Engineering Services Manager Trevor Feicht.
