hkskyline's 2008 LISBON Photo Collection Continued

The first thread was getting a bit too busy with over 300 photos. Time to start a 2nd thread so all the photos loading won't crash your computers.

1st Thread : http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=167262

359. St. George's Castle offers a beautiful panoramic view of Lisbon. It is one of many vantage points in Alfama that are well worth a visit.

360. If it weren't for the orange roofs, I would've thought this was San Francisco.

365. How many invaders successfully conquered Lisbon, with this huge fortress on watch?

371. Luckily, the skyscrapers are far away, not in the way of the old city.

372. Trying out my digital camera's zoom capabilities - not bad.

375. It's not all about views. The castle is open for visitors to explore the walls, towers, and everything else!

384. There are quite a lot of vantage points along the walls of St. George's Castle. Notice the bunch of trees in the middle of the picture? I showed some photos from that vantage point earlier.

402. On the other side, the views are far more serene.

413. Carmo Convent sits on the top of the hills overlooking Lisbon. The Great Earthquake left it in shambles, and is now a museum where visitors can see how glorious this place used to be. It's quite surreal walking along the 'insides', trying to imagine what the whole place used to look like.

Great looking city. I always imagined Lisbon to be an impoverished city (as compared to other euro cities at least), looks like I was pleasantly wrong! Thanks for this set!

Belem is a very short tram ride from Baixa. At first, I was surprised the guidebooks recommended this place as a day trip destination. I thought it was very much a part of today's modern Lisbon.

441. The tram dropped me off near this magnificent structure - Mosteiro dos Jeronimos.

445. Like many historic buildings, the level of detail is significant.

453. This looks a bit Gothic?

461. Padrao dos Descobrimentos celebrates Portugal's glorious maritime history.

466. I believe these are salt waters? It didn't have the salt air smell at all.

468. Hey ... there are people at the top!

474. The view from the top is quite nice. Unlike the other vantage points around the historic centre, this one's views are quite fresh and different.

483. I wish I landed in Lisbon during the day, so I could get some wonderful views of the cityscape.

489. I took many more photos of Belem. Now I descend from the Discoveries monument to explore a bit more.

492. A nice day fishing in the city.

495. Or ride a boat out to the open ocean for an even better fishing trip.

497. Torre de Belem is an interesting piece of architecture further down the road. Too bad the interior was closed.

510. Belem also has an impressive Maritime Museum!

512. Let's enter the Age of Discovery!

514. One part of the exhibition includes a whole showcase of boats!

551. In this last part of my great Lisbon tour, I return to Bairro Alto to explore the grit, the architecture, and the living neighbourhood.

556. Proportions make a world of a difference in people's perception of coziness. The buildings may look exactly the same, but the setting is extremely important. I would be far less impressed by this sight if the street was wider and had 4 lanes of traffic.

560. A fresh set of tiles and some paint will make this shine again.

563. Miradouro de Santa Catarina is another vantage point. This one faces the river towards the south.

566. Is that El Barto?

567. I love these rolling hill density settings. I saw plenty of those in San Francisco as well.

576. Britney Spears was here? She couldn't spell her name?

This concludes my Lisbon photo series. I love cities that have hills and water settings. I was quite amazed at the history, the grit, and the charm this place had to offer. The character is a lot different from other European cities I've been to, and even Macau, which was a former Portuguese colony steps away from my home base in Hong Kong. However, I did remark that Lisbon seemed poorer than its counterparts further north, but that did not stop me from having a great time.

I will keep updating the Sintra photo thread. I've some more left. In the meantime, stay tuned as I'm starting to post photos from Madrid, the next stop on my Euro 2008 tour.

My whole collection is on my website - http://www.globalphotos.org/lisbon.htm
