5. McCall and Lake Payette
This is a beautiful photo of Lake Payette and the Salmon River Mountains. I think that one of the better luxuries of living in Boise is the proximity and easy access to the forests and places such as this lake.

Have you also learned that secret from the river; that there is no such thing as time? That the river is everywhere at the same time, at the source and at the mouth, at the waterfall, at the ferry, at the current, in the ocean and in the mountains.-Hermann Hesse

Boise isn't dense. But it's walkable. Downtown has some true urbanity. Boise State University is nearby. The rippling Boise River is lined on both sides with big trees and bike paths, possibly the best urban feature imaginable. The older neighborhoods mostly north and east of Downtown are full of old houses and big trees.

My experience with Boise was very different growing up in the suburbs for four years (didn't like it) vs. living in the North End a half mile from Downtown (loved it).

Most of the city within the official city boundaries is dense and walkable, but there are some areas that could be more dense. The pictures you see with the mall(s) are on the outskirts of the city and some of the pictures are in Meridian which is a suburb of Boise and is a mix of new growth and farm land which has not been gobbled up yet. During the past decade there has been a lot of infill going on within the city boundaries and there is a big push within City Hall to create more density.

Ok, someone settle an issue for me: "Boi-see" or "Boizy" - which is it? I've heard both - even during the time that I was there (2 days) - and can't figure it out.

The correct way supposedly is Boi-see. Boi-zy is how newcomers pronounce the name But then some of my French friends who live in Boise are strong on the Z.

I lived there for 6.5 years and it'll be a cold day in hell when I call it "boi-see."

Dense? I love places like the North End, but to call anything in Boise dense is, very, very relative.

^^^^

I used to live in one of the McMansions in the hills around that area. As much as I hate McMansions (and I didn't really care for the design of the house), the area really was incredibly nice, especially during the summertime. Oh, how I miss the pleasantly hot and dry summer air both during day and during night. I miss that house plenty. If only the people there didn't have such larges sticks up their bums.
