Historical Saskatchewan Discussion

This is a thread to discuss Saskatchewan's history. Saskatchewan has been through boom and busts, right now it now it is undercredited(in my mind) for the history and historic buildings that are in our province.

So, if you want to post some of your city, town, or a ghost towns history, pr historic photos have fun and discuss it because its a big province out there

here are some old Saskatatoon photo's from an airplane at September 5th 1941. Photos from saskatoon Archvies.

here is a old map from 1882

and here is a drawing to promote people to go to saskatoon bac in the day

Looking north on 1st Ave from near 20th Street. Overhead foot bridge on left and Canada Building under construction on right. 1912

Postcard showing view down the Short Hill (Victoria Street): the Traffic Bridge, river and downtown. Possibly taken at official opening of the bridge, October 10, 1907

City of Medicine Hat disaster - postcard sent from Mrs. J.R. Whetter to her sister in Delisle, August 15, 1910. The Medicine Hat fouled her rudder and was destroyed against the piers of the Traffic Bridge on June 7, 1908.

The Empire Hotel at 2nd Avenue South and 20th St. East, ca. 1911.

The Warehouse District, 24th Street and Pacific Avenue, looking east. The Rumely Building is under construction.

The first railway bridge in Saskatoon was built in 1889-1890 where the Senator Sid Buckwold freeway bridge is now. It was destroyed by ice in 1904. This photo shows the new bridge on its temporary piers being washed out the following year. Spring breakup was a much-awaited and often calamitous event until the building of the Gardiner Dam upstream in the 1960s permanently altered the river's flow.

Great pictures, thanks for sharing!

I have a high resolution aerial image of downtown Regina c. 1964 (overhead, Google Earth style). I was actually going to upload it to urban regina tomorrow.

But for now, its time for bed!

Cool pictures!

One things hasn't changed much since those pictures were taken...Saskatoon's skyline. Juuuuust kidding.

That first picture is kind of cool, a small little city, yet 3 or 4 bridges.

I was at a friends house this evening and he happened to have a highschool yearbook from Mount Royal Collegiate 1983-1984.

As I began flipping through it, the following images caught my eye and had me thinking "what must have been on the minds of urban enthusiasts back in the day?".

The images speak for themselves, especially "Progress".

Whoa! Did Saskatoon ever have those three glass towers? lol. Skyline would have been cool if there was though. The tower on the right kind of resembles the SGI in regina.

Are you referring to the one on the far right? The structure looks almost triangular, or maybe that's just shadowing.

Wow. Saskatoon's skyline would be rocking with those towers there. Odd...I wonder what the purpose of that picture was.

I think Chaps was wondering where that highschool student got the rendering from. I doubt the student made that photo himself

Yes, the student likely made that him/herself. That's why it is shown in a school yearbook.

Is this really that hard to understand?

Ah I missed the "graphics arts assignment" part.

EDIT: Upon reviewing the post again, it doesn't say anything about it being an art assignment, so I didn't miss anything. I guess I just didn't make the assumption.

Like I said, I missed part of it. (edit...actually I guess I didn't...where does it state that it was an art assignment? It came from a yearbook yes...but I was wondering if there was something more to it than some kid just doing it up for fun/class.)

But man do you ever get rocked off your horse pretty easily. I apologize for affecting your life in such a negative way with that post. For your own safety, please stay away from prescription painkillers and twisted rope.

Found quite a few pages of old pics of Regina. Its amazing how the Baptist church looks exactly the same today as it did back then.
