Riding the Amtrak from Albany really shows how beautiful north of NY is. Then suddenly you're in darkness underneath the city, with all the graffiti and old pillars flying by. When you get to the Penn Station everything opens up at once. One of my favorite experiences, but maybe I'm easy to please that way.

I remember climbing that damn thing for some "team building" exercise during training for my first job in New York. Such a pain in the ass, but the view was certainly amazing once you got up there.

The Catskills are a little over an hour northwest, the Adirondacks are about 4-5 hours north. The Appalachian range is within easy driving distance. And there's hilly terrain as soon as you hit the suburbs to the north.

I love driving on the Taconic Parkway to Hudson NY. One of the most pleasant drives leaving NYC. You are literally surrounded by park land, forests and hills. Except that you must obey the speed limit. Cops will get you.
The skyline in the distance looks like another hill!
And it is, only this one's man-made and only took about a hudred years to build...
I have vague memories of going there as a child (to the state park), but I really need to get out to nature more.

This is some really good stuff.. Didn't know there wasn't a larger coastal plain (or relative lack thereof) around the city. I've never been west of Newark airport... Nice!

The mountains northwest of NYC are simply stunning. I have always wanted to visit the Catskills and for sure the Adirondacks. 6 million acres of parkland up there. NYC has the best of both worlds. An amazing city with amazing nature preserves close by.

NYC has the best of both worlds. An amazing city with amazing nature preserves close by.
Yeah, a lot of people think only of the urban side of New York. But the city contains, and is not too far from a lot of nature.
