Winnipeg Urban Boundary

Hey Everyone

I want to bring up a new topic for discussion. Many cities in North America have urban boundaries which are limits placed province wide on where new developments can take place, primarily the planning efforts are concentrated around the largest metropolitan centers.

I believe it was the David Suzuki Foundation that found that Winnipeg's urban land use had quadrupled while the population had only doubled, I'm not sure of the time frame exactly but its just the first part of the discussion?

What do you think about the urban boundary concept and what would be the best implementation of such a system for Winnipeg.

(We don't currently have one do we?)

implementing an urban boundry is just sommon sense if you ask me. the more spread out a city is, the more everyone pays for their services like transit, (more gas burnt) underground lines and plumbing, and streets. in times of skyrocketing resource prices, its sad to see so much sprawl still happening. i still hear so many people with the sububan mentality in our city. putting in place a plan would be a step in the right direction.

I believe we had one that restricted developments particularly in East and West St. Paul. If I recall Filmon got rid of it sometime during his tenure. Maybe Andy6 or someone of that era (no offense!) remembers better.

^I don't remember the details but the idea was to do something about the exodus to the region. I think that's when we came up with some capital region planning commission or something but in practise it's probably worse now than it was before. I say this because the new regulations pretty much preclude the development of sustainable communities and they don't really seem to be doing anything to limit exurban sprawl.

Well, It's awfully hard to have an urban boundary when the province is the principal developer (E.g. Waverly Waste)

Doer loves sprawl almost as much as Qualico.
