Modernism and charm in a great neighbourhood seen from the eyes of a woman!

I live in the city of Belo Horizonte.

I have created many threads here at SSP about various cities, though none of them had pics which were mine.

So, last week I decided to change that and went for a walk in charming neighbourhood of my city to take some pics.

The area is called "Cidade Jardim", wich means Garden City in portuguese.

It´s a residential area planned in the 40´s and wich had its boom in the 50´s and 60´s, so you´ll see lots of modernist homes.

The area seen from a distance. Lots of green.

Great pics. I love the lush and tropical feel of the area. Is this one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Belo Horizonte? The houses look like mansions.

The only thing I'm not so wild about are all the gates. Are all the houses gated? Is it due to crime?

Yes, it´s one of the most exclusive neighbourhoods in Belo Horizonte.
In the past, it was even more exclusive. Nowadays, other exclusive areas exist.

Not all the houses are gated, as the ones below show.

However, others are. And yes, it´due to crime.

most houses are gated, even much simpler ones, in most brazilian cities over 150k people.

hey, i remember in my childhood, NO HOUSES in my neighborhood had gates and fences. Now they ALL have gates and fences.

btw, the city may be lush, but its not so tropical. The average temp is low for most of Brasil, with exception of southern cities.

Wiki
"Belo Horizonte's climate can be classified as tropical altitude, with yearly average temperature between 18-19 and 22-23°C. The Köppen climate classification of the region is Cwa (Tropical on high altitudes, humid/warm summer and a dry/cool winter).

As a city located in the southern Hemisphere, Belo Horizonte's spring starts in September, its summer in December, its autumn in March, and its winter in June. Even though inter-seasonal differences are not as pronounced as they are in temperate places, and many people believe that, as in much of Brazil, there are just two seasons (a hot and humid one from October to March, and a colder and drier one from April to September), there is a contrast between spring and summer, and between fall and winter. The coldest month is generally July, with a lowest recorded temperature of 3.1°C (37.6ºF). The hottest month is usually January, with a highest recorded temperature of 35.4°C (95.7ºF). There can be problems related with low air humidity during August.

The 852m elevation of Belo Horizonte helps a little in cooling the city, suppressing high maximum air temperatures experienced in nearby cities at lower altitudes. At its foundation, Belo Horizonte had one of the finest climates of all Brazilian cities[citation needed], but as time passed and the city grew it has come to suffer from typical urban phenomena known as the heat island and thermal inversion. However, its climate is still neither as hot as Rio de Janeiro's, nor as cold as Curitiba's in the winter."

Thanks for the photos. Some very fine examples of 50s and 60s architecture.
