NHL Season 2024-2025

'Tis a new season and here's to brighter futures ahead. And that means you too, Calgary, Montreal and Ottawa.

Free agency starts tomorrow.

Technically not correct.

Pickard 2 x 2.

I like that A LOT. He is a very solid backup who can step in and confidently take 10-15 games off of Skinner.

Connor Brown 1 x 1 - he is VERY committed to his offseason and I suspect we will see 10-12G from him next year.

Arvidsson 2 x 4 mil

----

Vancouver lands DeBrusk @ 7 x 5.5! Damn

Nobody talking about how Zadorov is now a Bruin? That's a significant loss to the Canucks who should have paid the man.

Foegs to Kings 3x3. I will miss him.

Noah Philp 1 x 775

He is a Canmore local who has been a black ace and is an excellent hockey player. His family owns the local sports store here and the entire family are really nice people; what an opportunity.

I love Tanev but 6 years is a terrible idea for a 34 year old.

Vinny D to Van 2 x 2

I was not a big fan until more recently, but his progress was substantial over the last 8 months and he had signifiant upside.

It's for stretching out the AAV a bit. Probably would have still taken $27million to sign him for 4 years, which would be over 2 million more per year on the cap. Now after 3 or 4 years, he can be traded to a lower budget team needing to spend up to the floor if need be (although his actual salary is 4.5 each year as well), or bought out.

It's not a 6 year deal though, that's gravy. He is being hired for 3 years and that is to get around the cap and other issues.

Well then.

Janmark for 3 x 1.45

Henrique 2 x 3

Skinner 1 x 3

Probably the best signing today... some risk assuming he stall his progression but could be a bargain if he keeps developing.

Habs ink Slafkovsky to eight-year, $60.8M extension

Quote:
The Montreal Canadiens have signed forward Juraj Slafkovsky to an eight-year, $60.8 million contract extension, featuring an average annual value of $7.6 million.

Suzuki, Caufield and Slafkovsky are now all signed through 2030 for 23.3M.

Kent Hughes definitely had a good weekend drafting Demidov and Hage in the 1st round, not participating in the madness today keeping track on the rebuild.

A decent player, but 7.6mil for a -32, 0.5/pts/game guy is 'the best signing today'?

Montreal seems to continue to be heureux with mid-pack aspirations at best.

I know what you think you are saying. However if you look at the salary breakdown, it is actually 6 years at 4.5m per year, not just an AAV of 4.5m. There are rules now about front loading and dropping off the final years to nothing. So yes, they may only intend to have him for 3 or 4 years, as I said, but to pay him 27m in 3 or 4 years would have been too high for the cap, and they are still paying him the same actual dollars in year 6 as year 1.

Stamkos no longer in Tampa Bay just feels wrongthough. He should have made the entire career in Tampa Bay. 16 seasons. 2 Stanley Cups. Just seems wrong.

On an 8-year term, they're not really paying him for what he's done in the first 2 years of his career...

He projects to be a 70-80 point player - who knows, maybe more given that he's already at 50 on a rebuilding team. 7.6M AAV becomes a steal by year 3 or 4 of the deal.

What's with the Oilers trying to bring in as many shady and broken people as possible?

Mat Ishiba was interviewed by Sportico and expressed interest in being part of the effort to bring the Coyotes back to Arizona. Interesting to note that they asked him if he has had discussions with the NHL yet and offered no comment. Mat Ishiba was rumoured to be a potential buyer of the Coyotes but didn’t bid as high as SEG did.

If Ishiba ends up being the one to bring them back, they’re likely back at Footprint Arena in downtown Phoenix. It would have to be fully renovated to bring back hockey capabilities, but I wouldn’t consider that to be totally out of the question given what is happening with Delta Center in Salt Lake City, full renewal/renovations instead of a new arena.
