PHILADELPHIA | S.S. United States | 53,330 GRT | 990 FT (Redevelopment)

„ The full design program, developed over the last several years in conjunction with two prominent New York firms, RXR and MCR Hotels, would repurpose the legendary ocean liner as a unique, mixed-use destination, including a 1,000 key hotel, numerous food and beverage destinations, multiple event venues, acres of public green space, and a world-class museum. The bold and exciting plan preserves the ship’s history and activates the vessel’s commercial potential.
The conceptual plan for a privately funded, commercial redevelopment identified Manhattan’s Hudson River as the optimal “home port” for the vessel, due to its proximity to transportation and pedestrian access to the Javits Convention Center. The project would entail the redesign and reconstruction of adjacent piers, which would create acres of new public green space aboard the vessel and adjoining areas. It could also be adapted for other major urban waterfront destinations.

A full briefing on the proposed program for the SS United States by RXR and Conservancy representatives, as well as discussion of remaining challenges associated with advancing the vessel’s redevelopment, will be held on Tuesday, November 7 at 12pm (eastern time). Click HERE to register to attend.“

This is an awesome project. Really really hoping this all comes together and this old girl can be saved.

Just to be nitpicky though since that's my personality, there's something that bothers me about the fact this is being shown as moored parallel to the river. It just doesn't look right. As most will know that is not how ships we're docked or moored at the piers and I think this project would look better if it looked like a pier form with a perpendicular mooring.

Another comparison, just five feet under the top of the cooling towers of the Comcast Technology Center

Really bad that New York doesn't seem willing to play. The case starts tomorrow, which I cautiously optimistic that the Conservancy will win.

Case ends tomorrow. Looks like the judge wants them to settle.

So... this hasn't made the news yet so here's some SSP original news. The Conservancy sent in an email to their supporters (including yours truly) that the court case ended in a no verdict. Both parties need to do some "fact finding" regarding the law. Penn Warehousing has to do this in a month, the SSUSC has to do it before March 1. If you're the Conservancy, this is a month to desperately raise funds and find somewhere to park.

The vast underused parcels between 11th and 12th would be a good site for a new MSG. I believe that they’re not zoned for tall buildings, so they’re probably worth a lot less than building sites around Penn Station.

Not as good as right across the street from MSG between 6 and 7 Av though. That's is the obvious highest potential land in all of Manhattan IMO and there is one shot to get it right. Thank goodness NYguy isn't on this thread to use his crystal ball and tell me I'm crazy.

I agree, but this spot would probably be much cheaper to build a new one.

I’m curious what’s going on with MSG considering the short renewal period.

P.S.: Sorry. I just realized that Philly has its own SS US site. I didn’t realize that.

Cheaper usually means worse location. It's true that location wise MSG at it's current location can't be beat. The only thing that could equal it in terms of centrality and transit is directly across the street.

That’s true. I just want to see a really good redevelopment plan that’s viable.

Take this with a meteor-sized grain of salt, but a coworker of mine who has a fairly good track record told me that the Conservancy has found a place for her in Delaware. That's all I know.
