SLRT Opening - April 24th

We've been all waiting for it. . . or at least the LRT nutters around here. We're just days away from the opening ceremonies. Who's going to be there? Who will be on the first train?

For those that are going: take lots of pics for those of us that can't be there.

Hopefully the weather will be a little more agreeable than when the last stations were opened. Either way, good thing to see for Edmonton.

Yes, the 24th is the Grand Opening with the events and such. April 25th is first day of full service.

Should be exciting. Will try to make my way down to Southgate, since I live right there...

I will be there, camera in hand.

Haven't decided yet if I should try to sneak on the first train from South Campus, or snap the first train rolling into Southgate (and then sneak on the train for the last leg of the trip).

^I doubt ETS has a sense of humour. I heard like 3 TransitWatch messages on my 7 min LRT journey this morning.

Saturday sees southern stages of Edmonton LRT open officially

Thousands of citizens crowd platforms at new Southgate and Century Park stations

By Cigdem Iltan, edmontonjournal.com

April 24, 2010 3:40 PM

EDMONTON - Thousands of people crushed into LRT trains at Southgate and Century Park to ride the newly-laid track after the south LRT expansion officially opened to the public Saturday.

Mayor Stephen Mandel and city councillors high fived each other at the Century Park opening ceremony.

“It shows the courage in council is justified. When we did this it was a big decision, doing it and spending a lot of money on these things,” Mandel said. “I’m proud the council had the courage to do it, but far prouder our citizens see this as a great advantage to them and a way to move in the 21st century.”

Wish the ETS would invest in a bit of an update to its wayfinding signage....those station signs looks like they are from the Gretzky era.

Really like the way the trains look though.

^Are you talking about the orange lit signage? If so, I agree, that is ol' skool.

It's a nice piece of art, and there are 3 of them in that station.
