Proton expands Tanjung Malim plant, adding new stamping facility
By Azanis Shahila Aman - April 22, 2021 @ 6:09pm

Proton Holdings Bhd (Proton) has begun the expansion works for its production plant in Tanjung Malim, following an official ground-breaking ceremony to mark the addition of a new stamping facility.

Quote:
KUALA LUMPUR: Proton Holdings Bhd (Proton) has begun the expansion works for its production plant in Tanjung Malim, following an official ground-breaking ceremony to mark the addition of a new stamping facility.

The expansion will house a new superlarge press machine to enhance stamping abilities, part of the national automaker's plan to increase localisation levels for current and future models.

The new stamping facility is expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2022.

More significantly, it is part of Proton's overarching plan to increase levels of localisation, both for current and future models, the automaker in a statement said.

With an investment of RM200 million, this new facility is part of the plan to make Tanjung Malim a world class manufacturing plant.

This is on top of the RM1.2 billion that was spent previously.

"The new press will allow for the stamping of much larger pieces of bodywork and other parts," it said.

The company said this investment is part of its growth strategy as well as for future planning as it is designed to allow for the manufacturing of more model lines.

It is also in line with Proton's technology strategy as the new area will include tools as well as systems.

Proton chief executive Officer Dr Li Chunrong said Proton must continue to look to the future.

Li said this new addition is part of Proton's strategy to ensure that it can grow continuously as well as increase model footprint when the company has to.

"This means having the ability to build more variants but more importantly to be able to build them to the highest standards as well as to incorporate new technology", he said.

Proton has seen a huge turnaround in fortunes over the last three years.

The carmaker has launched new models, gained market share, improved quality and also revamped its entire dealer network.

This resulted in the company being the only large manufacturer in Malaysia to post growth in 2020.

Li said this facility, one small part of a larger journey, is especially important for the company because it means Proton can do far more localisation going forward.

"This will have a spill-over effect which will see us engaging with more vendors and further growing the local automotive ecosystem", he added.

Proton export sales hit 98-month high
Bernama June 16, 2021 11:05 am +08

Quote:
KUALA LUMPUR (June 16): Proton Holdings Bhd sold 669 units to overseas distributors in May 2021, making it the group’s best export sales month since March 2013 — a span of 98 months.

In a statement today, the national carmaker said up to the end of May, the total year-to-date (YTD) volume was at 174% of the target set and only 6% behind what was achieved for the whole of 2020.

Proton’s export sales growth has been powered by growing demand in several key markets, some new and some where Protons have been sold for decades.

For example, Pakistan is a new market for the company, but for the first five months of 2021, it was by far the best performer.

“On the other hand, Brunei, which started selling Proton vehicles in 1987, was the third biggest export market by volume this year, and in May, importers PAD Motors had the best sales month in the company’s history,” it said.

Alpha Ezz El-Arab, the importer and distributor of Proton cars in Egypt, had already received 350 units so far this year, making it Proton’s second largest export market, the automotive firm said.

International sales director Steven Xu said at the beginning of the year, Proton’s plan for 2021 was to aggressively grow its export sales volume.

Proton Holdings Bhd unveils the new 2022 Proton Persona with an updated design plus enhanced features.

Quote:
KUALA LUMPUR: Proton Holdings Bhd (Proton) has unveiled the new 2022 Proton Iriz and Persona with an updated design plus enhanced features.

The latest additions to the company's range also come in new colours and improved passengers' comfort and safety.

Proton Edar Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Roslan Abdullah said the styling changes and addition of a new Active variant for the Proton Iriz would help boost visual appeal.

For both models, Proton has also made changes to the interior and infotainment system while retaining the automaker's trademark driving experience.

A noticeable change to the interior of the 2022 Proton Iriz and Persona is introducing a new 8-inch floating infotainment head unit with voice command functions that have been updated to control the air-conditioning and driver's window.

With a total of six USB ports – three at the front, two at the rear and one behind the rear-view mirror, to power a dashcam, both the 2022 Proton Iriz and Persona have ample power outlets to suit the demands of a digital lifestyle.

Perodua sold 6,988 units in August as production begins to increase
Surin Murugiah September 03, 2021 10:25 am +08
Quote:
KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 3): Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua) sold 6,988 vehicles in August, compared with only 655 units in July, as the automaker’s manufacturing and sales arms gradually resumed their operations after the nationwide lockdown was lifted on Aug 16.

In a statement today, Perodua president and chief executive officer (CEO) Datuk Zainal Abidin Ahmad said the company would see the production and registration numbers multiply in September as the situation normalises.

All of Perodua’s operations were halted in accordance with the national lockdown introduced on June 1 to control the spread of Covid-19.

Year to date (YTD), Perodua registered 104,933 vehicles sold or a 12.5% drop compared with 119,977 units between January and August last year.

Zainal said Perodua is working on closing this gap by further increasing its manufacturing output as well as improving the standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure the safety of its workers and customers.

“Based on the time and resources available, we are reducing our sales target by 10.8% to 214,000 units this year from our earlier target of 240,000.

“Our main concern now is to ensure that the automotive industry will be able to sustain itself this year as Covid-19 and the semiconductor supply shortage continue to haunt manufacturers both domestically and globally,” he said.

On the semiconductor chip shortage, Zainal said that Perodua was able to secure enough to ensure that production would resume smoothly this year and that most of Perodua’s outstanding orders would be met within the year.

“For now, the semiconductor chip supply is still a global issue, and we are working with our partners and suppliers to limit any disruption it may cause,” he said.

Perodua sales number climbs 102% m-o-m to 14,160 in September
Tan Siew Mung October 04, 2021 11:55 am +08
Quote:
KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 4): Delivery of Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua) vehicles continues to improve for the third consecutive month by 102% to 14,160 units in September from 6,988 units in August as the supply situation gradually improves, Perodua said in a statement Monday.

Perodua president and chief executive officer Datuk Zainal Abidin Ahmad said the automotive supply chain has shown improvements but has yet to reach its full potential.

“We are continuously working with our suppliers and dealers to further improve productivity and safety,” he said.

He explained that the gradual growth in both production and sales were in keeping with the strict quality control measures throughout Perodua’s operations to ensure customer satisfaction.

“We thank our customers that have continued to be patient with us as we further improve production,” Zainal Abidin said.

From a year-to-date perspective, Perodua — the associate company of listed UMW Holdings Bhd — sold 119,093 vehicles between January and September 2021 compared with 145,012 in the same period of 2020.

In comparing the second quarter of the year to the third quarter, sales plummeted by 44.6% to 21,803 units between July and September from 39,381 vehicles registered between April and June this year, as the second national lockdown began on June 1, 2021 and was lifted in stages beginning Aug 16, 2021.

“The fourth quarter of 2021 does offer a better outlook than the previous two quarters, especially the marked improvement in the reduction of Covid-19 cases nationwide as well as the nearly 90% vaccination rate of the Malaysian adult population,” Zainal Abidin said.

“We do apologise for any inconvenience caused by the delay in the delivery and we will assist our customers in any way that we can to ensure that their Perodua is delivered as soon as possible,” he added.

Proton inks MoA to distribute smart Automobile's EVs in Malaysia, Thailand
Izzul Ikram January 19, 2022 19:04 pm +08

Quote:
KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 19): Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional Sdn Bhd (Proton) is planning to introduce premium electric vehicle (EV) brand smart Automobile Co Ltd's range of new EVs into the rapidly growing ASEAN automotive market.
In a statement Wednesday (Jan 19), Proton said it and smart Automobile have signed a memorandum of agreement (MoA) which will see both parties collaborating via Proton Edar, who will be appointed as the importer, distributor and dealer for smart Automobile in Malaysia and Thailand. At the same time, smart Automobile (Nanning) Sales Co Ltd — a wholly-owned unit of smart Automobile — will fulfil the role of a gateway for smart Automobile to the region, said Proton.

smart Automobile is a joint venture between German and Chinese automotive groups Mercedes-Benz AG and Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co Ltd founded in 2019, which they plan to develop into a world-leading, premium EV technology brand.

“With the signing of the MoA, Proton is taking its first steps on its New Energy Vehicle strategic journey. By collaborating with smart Automobile, we will be able to gain experience in the selling, servicing, and charging of new EVs and build up the skill sets we require to be a force in Asean’s rapidly expanding new EV sector. This is also an opportunity to tap on smart’s customer base, which will open up more opportunities for the Proton brand,” said Proton chairman Datuk Seri Syed Faisal Albar.

Proton also shared, citing forecasts by the International Renewable Energy Agency, that the new EV market will grow to around 10 million units in Southeast Asia by 2025, and that smart Automobile, with its new product portfolio due to be launched in the coming years, will be well placed to take advantage of growth in the region.

“The MoA with Proton Edar is for the company to establish a multi-level sales and service network in Malaysia and Thailand, as well as a brand experience centre and a number of sales locations, providing local markets with sales and after-sales services for smart vehicles.

“With smart’s ‘dual-home’ (Europe and China) business strategy, the company already covers two of the world’s largest automotive markets. Now, as part of our forward-looking strategy, we are joining hands with Proton in Southeast Asia. With minimal investment, the agreement will allow us to enter the Thai and Malaysian markets in the near future.

"As our regional partner, Proton has a first-class corporate reputation, extensive experience and valuable knowledge of local operations. We look forward to working together to provide consumers in Southeast Asia with a new premium, intelligent, all-electric driving experience,” said smart Automobile's chief executive officer Tong Xiangbei.

According to Proton, the MoA with Proton Edar is for the company to establish a multi-level sales and service network in Malaysia and Thailand, as well as a brand experience centre and a number of sales locations, providing local markets with sales and after-sales services for smart vehicles. "Currently, there are no plans to collaborate beyond the tenets of the agreement," it added.

Petronas subsidiary Gentari inks MoU with Proton New Energy to drive EV infrastructure in Malaysia

By Asila Jalil - October 13, 2022 @ 1:09pm

Quote:
KUALA LUMPUR: Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) subsidiary Gentari Sdn Bhd (GSB) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Proton New Energy Technology Sdn Bhd (Pro-Net), a subsidiary of Proton Holdings Bhd, to drive growth in Malaysia's electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure in line with national decarbonisation goals.

GSB, officially launched last month, is picking up the pace of growing its business via partnerships and joint collaborations.

"GSB aims to solve the world's most pressing sustainable energy needs by changing how we live today to secure the future.

"The collaboration with Pro-Net will go a long way in supporting the switch to sustainable transportation in Malaysia by progressing towards making EV adoption more affordable and accessible," said Petronas' head of clean energy solutions transition Shah Yang Razalli in a statement.

Pro-Net was represented by its chief executive officer, Zhang Qiang.

GSB said that under the MoU, the company would provide Proton's nationwide network of dealers with charging solutions that would help Proton's customers in Malaysia.

To date, GSB has already installed more than 225 charging points in Malaysia and India.

"Today's exchange of documents with GSB allows us to collaborate with the clean energy solutions provider and contribute to the build-up of Malaysia's charging infrastructure," said Zhang Qiang.

This collaboration between GSB and Pro-Net supports the Dasar Tenaga Negara (DTN) aspiration for Malaysia to be a low-carbon nation by 2040 by increasing the percentage share of EVs from less than one per cent in 2018 to 38 per cent by 2040.
