From which city is your american TV channels in your part of Canada?

I've always been curious to know. What is the city coming from the American TV channels on the regular cable in your area?

I live in Magog QC, my cable provider is Cogeco and I get all the Detroit MI programming (Fox, CBS, NBC & ABC).

What about yours?

My provider (Shaw) offers a weird mishmash of North Dakota, Minneapolis and upstate New York as the standard offerings.

I don't watch a whole lot of TV, but I do remember having a Boston news channel growing up. Not sure why.

For Ottawa (Rogers) and Gatineau (Vidéotron), the big four US networks ABC NBC CBS and FOX all come from Detroit. At least in Gatineau, PBS is Mountain Lake PBS from Plattsburgh, NY.

Prior to the switchover to Detroit, for many years Ottawa-Gatineau received the mainstream networks from Rochester, NY. And the PBS station was out of Watertown.

And going back into the 70s, for a time the only US station in Ottawa was WWNY out of Watertown, NY. That station was afilliated with all three (at the time) big US networks: ABC-CBC-NBC. They'd pick and choose what they thought would be the best shows off each network and build their schedule based on that.

When I lived in various parts of the Maritimes we had WVII and WLBZ (zee!) out of Bangor, ME most of the time. Most of Atlantic Canada gets Detroit or Boston these days IIRC.

Over the air, in Woodstock NB, our American networks came from Bangor and Presque Isle maine. Of course that was just CBS and PBS. Canadian networks were CBC, ATV and if we were lucky MITV from Saint John.

Currently, on Bell Fibe in Freddy, most of our stations are from Boston. If we get the timeshifting packages, the West coast feeds are from Seattle.

I could've sworn a few years back our Fox station was from Rochester, NY; but that's certainly changed. (Or maybe that's what Rogers is/was offering).

In Regina, it's Boston for the standard package and Seattle for the time-shifted package. So I see nothing but Seahawks and Patriots games. My two least favourite NFL teams.

I wonder why it's so random, e.g. western Canadian cities getting eastern US feeds, Ottawa gets Detroit channels, etc. Why don't we all just get feeds from the most proximate US city?

Probably because the rebroadcasting rights are secured per company. And since we basically only have 3-4 cable companies total, everyone gets the same channels.

Those that can get some variety might have legacy channels from smaller Cable companies that were bought up, or they are getting over the air access to the channels.

Spokane. Which is the same for all of Alberta, I believe. I don't know if they still do this, but I remember a while back seeing on the Spokane news weather forecasts they often include the forecasts for BC and Alberta up to Edmonton, though I can't remember if they convert temps to Celsius for the Canadian side or not.

We also get KTLA, WGN, Peachtree, something out of Boston, something out of Rochester, and something from NYC.

In BC we Get Seattle affiliates for ABC, NBC, CBS, CW, Fox, PBS and a local one for MeTV which is based in Bellingham but has an office in Vancouver as it targets the Vancouver market, but they now call it MeTV Seattle. We also get Detroit PBS. Plus peachtree TV from Atlanta and WGN from Chicago, and Los Angeles KTLA (CW).

If you have time shifting we get Boston and Detroit and New York - WPIX (CW) and a then a few more which i always forget we have.

Best TV I had was a Starchoice dish I got when I lived on a ski hill in BC in the late '90's. Back then you got EVERYTHING on satellite and you had access to the time shifts for every time zone. It was awsesome. Then Shaw bought Starchoice and ruined it

Toronto gets all of the Buffalo affiliates, most can be received over the air as well. Buffalo's PBS station WNED is branded as Buffalo-Toronto.
