We had a couple bad summers and everyone moved back to Winnipeg, Quebec and Ontario.

No. It's a civic census.

You can see results for other civic censes (not every municipality in the province, never mind the CMA, does them annually or at all so prepare to be disappointed) at www.altapop.ca

My predictions..

2012: 27,516. Though I'd like to see the city proper break 30k again.

CMA approaching 40k growth to reach 1,310,000 total population. Now if only they'd finally add all of those cities/towns directly south of the city, the CMA would hit 1.5 million in a few years.

Wow just realized the census results are supposed to be released today. Usually they wait until the end of July. Link below, though nothing is out yet...

And here's your results: 2.86% growth in one year. Pretty damn impressive considering most of Canada is sitting at around a 1% population increase/year.

Calgary’s population is booming again, rising to 1,120,225.
And here's your results:

Results of the city’s 2012 civic census released today shows significant growth of 29,289 new residents, or a 2.86 per cent increase from April 2011.

I am always interested to see if the Beltline outpaces growth for the rest of the city. It has been doing so for the last 5 years or so. The last three years it grew by 2.9%, 3.1% and 3.5%. But, there haven't been as many condos starting occupancy in the last year, so it may be lower. I can't think of any.

I have a friend looking for a place to rent and it is a freakin rat race trying to find something. Almost no one returns calls at all or phones back and says the place is taken..... Reminds me of 2006 so that is what I based my guess on.

Yeah, Beltline only grew by about 180 or so this year I believe or about 1% No significant condo completions this past year. I expect the next couple censuses return to that 500-800 people per year pace.

A couple of interesting things in this census. The housing start split was about 57% single family 43% multifamily. So quite balanced.

Also the inner ring of primarily R2 communities (like South Calgary, Killarney, Mount Pleasant) all had fairly strong growth rates. The number of shrinking communities is dropping.

Yeah the only new building in the last couple years is Luna, and no one has moved in yet.

Nice! 29,289 new residents, or a 2.86 per cent. That's some good solid growth. I was going to guess 24k which I would have expected to be very good, but 29k...awesome.

The year after next (2014) should be very solid for the Beltline. Drake, Calla, Luna, and Keynote will all be done and have had move-ins by then. Alura and Aura not too far behind.

I'm surprised at my 'hoods increase (+273). Given the accelerated infill development this year, the increases will continue here.

Noticed that too. I think much of this may be because of contextual semis that are really filling in places like Killarney, etc. Not a lot of multi-family above 4 units in these areas, but it still creates considerable growth.

If Calgary wants to promote pretty substantial inner city growth, but that isn't large scale, we would just upzone all those R-C2 communities to M-CG (townhouse). But based on how difficult even contextual semis are to get approved now (and not appealed), I am skeptical this would happen.
