Talking D'oh! - Homer Simpson goes to Vancouver 2010

The Simpsons aim to strike Olympic gold with curling episode

JILL COLVIN

From Wednesday's Globe and Mail Last updated on Wednesday, Jul. 29, 2009 02:53AM EDT

Homer Simpson has tried nearly every pursuit under the sun, from astronaut to mayor to monorail conductor - not to mention his full-time gig as nuclear safety inspector.

But just in time for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, Homer will try his hand at curling, one of Canada's most popular, if misunderstood, sports.

Producers for the Fox hit The Simpsons knew they wanted to create an Olympic-themed episode. When a writer suggested curling, producers believed they'd struck comedic gold.

"I thought it was perfect," said Al Jean, the show's head executive producer.

In the episode that will air in February, 2010, Homer and Marge join a mixed curling team. In classic Simpsons fashion, the team ends up representing the United States at the Vancouver Olympic Games.

Homer, as usual, is a deadweight on the team. But Marge is a sweeping star.

"It turns out Marge is very good because she does so much sweeping during her daily life," Mr. Jean said with a laugh.

The episode ends in a momentous victory, as team Simpson out-brooms the Swedes, earning a demonstration sport gold medal.

"This is the most exciting thing that's ever happened in curling" a cartoon version of sports broadcaster Bob Costas declares after their triumph.

Veteran Canadian curling champion Randy Ferbey said he is glad to see curling in the prime-time limelight, especially in the United States, where it is just gaining ground.

"I think it's wonderful," he said. "I'm sure they're going to have fun with it."

The U.S. has only 16,000 registered curlers, compared to one million in Canada, said Terry Kolesar, director of communications at USA Curling.

But the sport's popularity south of the border has been steadily growing since its designation as an official Olympic sport in 1998.

"I think that people are starting to understand the uniqueness and beauty of the game," said Jason Smith, a member of the U.S. 2010 Olympic curling team.

Ms. Kolesar said part of the sport's appeal is that it's easy enough for the average, middle-aged Joe. Make that Homer or Marge.

But are they concerned that the writers may have taken some cheap shots at curling's expense?

"I think any publicity we can get for the sport is nothing but a good thing," Mr. Smith said.

This is not the Simpsons' first time in Canada. The family visited Toronto in 2002, and, in 2005, Homer crossed the border into Manitoba in search of cheap prescription drugs.

Homer and Marge join a curling team as the Simpsons pay homage to the popular sport

CALGARY - Curling will be receiving some prime-time exposure just prior to next year's Winter Olympics in Vancouver as Homer and Marge Simpson take up one of Canada's favourite sports.

An episode of the long-running comedy "The Simpsons'' featuring the cartoon power couple playing the game is scheduled to run in early February on the Fox Network.

"We wanted to do a show at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver and my initial idea was to have Homer and three of his buddies do a four-man bobsled,'' said writer Rob LaZebnik in an interview with The Canadian Press.

"Then we decided there's a lot more interesting story having Homer do something with Marge. One of the head writers suggested curling and we all liked it. I learned about mixed curling and it seemed kind of perfect.''

In the episode, Homer and Marge form a mixed-doubles curling team with Principal Skinner and his mother, who are experienced curlers. It turns out that Marge is a natural, while Homer is a disaster on the ice.

Marge is faced with a difficult decision: Possibly win a medal by asking Homer to leave the team or ruin their chances by keeping him.

"You'll see the comedy in it comes from Homer and Marge, and Homer turns out not to be a great curler and Marge is a great curler - part of it is all the housework she has done with her brooming,'' laughs LaZebnik.

He and several other members of his staff spent an afternoon at a southern California curling club to pick up the nuances of the sport.

Veteran Edmonton curler Randy Ferbey, a six-time Canadian champion and a four-time World Champion, said the exposure is great.

"I'm sure they're going to somehow make a mockery of it like they do every other thing, but I think you need to take it with a grain of salt,'' Ferbey said.

"It brings attention to our sport and I think it's wonderful. The more curling on TV, whether it's in an animated form or real form, the better.''

Ferbey is a fan of the Simpsons and said the publicity will be a bonus in the United States, where curling's popularity is basically limited to a handful of northern states.

"In some states I guess it's OK, but the U.S. has so much going for it with pro sports. I mean in the states we struggle with hockey, for God's sake!''

LaZebnik said skewering the sport is not part of the plan.

"Since everyone in the curling world had been so supportive, we wanted to take it seriously on the show. The funny thing is it's an event in an episode where Homer actually takes something seriously,'' LaZebnik said. ``I think we're really very respectful to it. We're surprisingly respectful.''

A sidebar plot involves daughter Lisa struggling to collect Olympic pins.

Rick Patzke, the Chief Operating Officer for USA Curling, said there are only about 16,000 people in the United States who actually play the sport. He said everyone watches The Simpsons and the publicity will be a blessing.

"I learned a long time ago not to take it personal when someone makes fun of curling - a lot of them who used to make fun of it are now curlers,'' he noted.

And there is something about Homer Simpson that just screams curling, he said.

"If you look at Homer and Marge - I think they are the quintessential curlers. That's pretty much what curlers are, right? They make fun of themselves, drink beer and eat doughnuts.''

There have been several references to Canada on "The Simpsons'' over the years, but only one previously included curling. When the family visited Toronto in 2002, the script featured a TV show called "Curling for Loonies.''

"The Simpsons'' is the longest-running television comedy to date and will mark 20 years on air in 2010.

While mixed doubles isn't currently an Olympic discipline, it is being considered by the International Olympic Committee as a medal sport for upcoming Olympic Winter Games.

I think it goes under the radar in Canada too. I've never thought of curling as one of Canada'a "most" popular sports.

One million registered curlers in Canada!! Is that really true? Where do these people live? Curling--Canada's equivalent to NASCAR.

outside of vancouver and cities its popular

even towns of 500 people have curling rinks in northern bc and alberta etc

they might not have a traffic light but they have a curling rink

its pretty fun really we used to do it all the time - schools have curling teams, and we had jam pail curling as they called it - tournaments between schools

NASCAR is actually pretty popular in Canada

Curling is nothing like NASCAR, unless you equate Grandpas with pants pulled up to their chest, with rednecks.

This is awesome news, but it's too bad The Simpsons are no longer very good. The old episodes are so funny but most new ones are lame, still I can hardly wait to watch this episode.

^Yeah. The Simpsons is not nearly as good as it was. Seasons 2-7 = comic gold. Since then, its gotten pretty bad with some stand out episodes here and there. Regardless, you better believe I'll be watching this. Hopefully, they will throw some shots Vancouver's way. There is plenty the writers can make fun of (I believe two of the writers are Canadian).

I'd always hoped Vancouver would one day have a prominent appearance on the Simpsons but I never actually expected a whole episode to revolve around the city. I'm with many others here in that I haven't even watched a new episode of the Simpsons in years but I'll definitely be all over this one.

And it only cost us $3-billion to get that episode!

Seriously, I can't wait. I'm guessing it'll be aired on the Sunday before the opening ceremony.

I always though seeing a Simpsons episode in Vancouver was a pipe dream I was happy with the couple of references they made to Vancouver.

Here is a reference I recall seeing:

Quote:
Season Eighteen (2005-2006)

Kill Gil, Volumes 1 & 2 (#JABF01 / SI-1801) - At Krusty’s Kristmas on Ice, Moe insists to Patty and Selma that all male figure skaters are ‘twinkly in the lutz’. Elvis Stojko, who is performing, attempts to correct Moe by saying “That is a common misconception, I have a girlfriend in Vancouver”, to which Moe retorts “Made up girlfriend, made up city”
